Cloud9 Topple Team Liquid to Win 2021 LCS Mid-Season Showdown
Cloud9 are the 2021 LCS Mid-Season Showdown champions! They’ve not only beaten their biggest rivals Team Liquid in one of the most thrilling Best of 5s in recent history, but they’ve also avenged their loss from a couple of months back, making this quite a sweet 2-for-1 deal! And boy what a Best of 5 it was!
A long list of superlatives immediately comes to mind and, in all fairness, all of them are applicable and appropriate. Cloud9 are, for all intents and purposes, the best team in North America, but a huge shoutout needs to go Team Liquid’s way as well. They nearly got the job done with a substitute — a player who is not even remotely close to Lucas Tao Kilmer “Santorin” Larsen’s level. That alone simply boggles the mind and is a true testament to what this particular Team Liquid line-up is capable of.
An Insane Best of 5
Now, this exhilarating Best of 5 definitely delivered in every which way, but it’s impossible not to be at least a little bit disappointed. The fact that Santorin couldn’t compete for health reasons means we were robbed of an even bigger spectacle — one that might have gone the other way. But it wasn’t meant to be. Regardless, Cloud9 have earned their spot atop the LCS fair and square and have demonstrated yet again why they’re so revered by their peers.
Yesterday’s Best of 5 was an absolute masterclass, and now that we’re a couple of hours removed from the whole thing, two takeaways stand out the most: (1) Luka “Perkz” Perković was undoubtedly worth his obscene price tag; (2) Cloud9 are absolute madmen.
If you want to understand just what kind of team they really are, you don’t need to watch the entire series — game five will suffice.
To lane swap into Cho’Gath and pull off that whole Sion level one jungle clear was mind-blowing to say the least. But that’s Cloud9 in a nutshell — they echo much of what made G2 Esports so darn great back in 2019. They’re fearless. They engage like their lives depend on it, without hesitation, without reserve. They don’t care for the odds nor will they think twice before attempting the most insane strategy imaginable. That’s a bit of that well-known, patented LPL craziness and you just love to see it.
Doing these things requires a veteran-heavy line-up and some mighty talented players. Fortunately, Cloud9 has that in spades. Whether this is the beginning of a brand-new dynasty still remains to be seen (not if Team Liquid has a say in the matter), but one thing is for certain: the LCS hasn’t been this exciting in quite a while!
Fortunately for the boys in white and blue, this is just the beginning — they’ll represent their region at the 2021 Mid-Season Invitational against the very best teams in the world! If they keep playing this darn well they might even stand a chance of leaving a mark! Either way, MSI can’t come soon enough!
