Cloud9 Staying Together for 2021

by in League of Legends | Sep, 8th 2020

The tale of Cloud9’s 2020 run will long be remembered for its mind-blowing start and mind-boggling conclusion. It is, without a doubt, one of the strangest moments in Western League of Legends history. Fortunately, if you’re a Cloud9 fan, you have a cause for celebration as this fascinating line-up intends to stay together for 2021. That’s great news, especially considering how this most recent Summer Split didn’t do them justice.

A Team That Sticks Together…

Cloud9 went from being at the top of North America to missing out on Worlds for the first time in its history. They went from being 35W-2L to having a sub-50% win rate in the second half of the Summer Split. How is such a thing even possible? The consensus is still out, and no one’s quite sure. The meta did shift, but barely so. The boys in black and blue did regress both individually as well as a five-man unit. They weren’t quite as sharp or quick to react, and their team fighting left a lot to be desired. Finally, their drafts were — at best — bafflingly abysmal. For a once so nimble and dangerous team in the pick and ban phase, the sights of them drafting the most egregious picks and team comps made no sense whatsoever. They never adapted, for whatever reason. Was it hubris? Absolute arrogance? Or the inability to fully observe their mistakes and correct course in due time? As things stand, no one has an answer to this perplexing mystery.

Cloud9 fans perhaps have it worst. After multiple years of watching their team play second fiddle to Team SoloMid and Team Liquid, they were finally awarded for their faith with one of the most dominant runs in LCS history. Unfortunately, it didn’t last long. The tale of Icarus certainly comes to mind.

At least they won the Spring Split, so it wasn’t all in vain. Hopefully, they’ll identify their biggest issues and mount a comeback in a couple of months. Cloud9 being in peak form is a prerequisite for a more competitive and engaging LCS in 2021, so here’s hoping! We’ll go into Cloud9 and their mind-boggling fall from grace in another piece over the coming weeks, so stay tuned!
