CoD Teams Signing Content Creators Over Players

by in Call of Duty | Oct, 8th 2019

With a franchised league in Call of Duty comes the problem of finding enough space on the 10 teams for all the outstanding players to get spots on. With so few teams and spots, you’d think these new groups would be looking to fill their rosters and sub squads with the best players possible.

Allegedly, though, teams aren’t looking much further than their starting lineups and have been instead signing Call of Duty content creators to their sub positions.

Censor on a Team?

The allegations started after FaZe Censor confirmed he had gotten a spot on a lineup, a surprising move given he hasn’t played in the pro-scene in several years.

With several big-name players still without contracts and not even being talked with about joining a squad, accusations have flown that several new teams are trying to do what the LA Gladiators did in OWL. They signed a highly toxic player and popular streamer XQC to their academy team as a substitute. He streams all day and acts as a brand ambassador for the org.

Just like him, Censor isn’t likely being picked up for his skill, but his social media presence and reach, and more could soon follow.

While no other streamers have come forward as being signed to any of these new teams, it wouldn’t be unlikely given the CoD ecosystem.

Content creators are king in CoD, with the flashy highlight reels and headshot montages that many of you are likely familiar with growing up.

Content creators raking in money can be a huge boost in teams breaking even, given how expensive the league is and how long it takes for teams to make their investment back.

Taking spots away from pros who deserve a chance to at least be subs, to have some Call of Duty content creators on hand, is terrible to see. Hopefully, we don’t see many other orgs following suit.

Censor has confirmed what team he’s on as well. We’ll likely hear more about it over the coming days, and the new teams begin announcing their brands and lineups.

As always, we’ll continue to keep you all informed as the situation develops.
