Call of Duty Warzone Season 1: Rebirth Island, Resurgence, More

by in Call of Duty | Dec, 15th 2020

Activision is getting ready to release Call of Duty Warzone Season 1, and it looks to be a massive extension of an already impressive game. The first season is technically not Warzone’s first season of content, but it is the first one since its connection to the recently released Black Ops Cold War.

Call of Duty Warzone Season 1 Start Date and Time

The Call of Duty Warzone Season 1 release is coming soon and will likely already be here by the time you are reading this. The launch was originally going to be last week but was pushed back to this week to give the team a few more days to get everything ready for the launch.

There is so much that is happening as part of Call of Duty Warzone Season 1, and that is just for the battle royale game. There is so much other content happening for Black Ops Cold War, too, including introducing new game modes, maps, and much, much more.

The same goes for Call of Duty Warzone Season 1 and gives fans of the battle royale game a new map to explore, a new game mode, new items, and so much more to unpack. Even if you don’t own Black Ops Cold War yet, there is so much content for you to enjoy in this massive new season.

You’ll be able to start playing the new content when it drops later tonight at 11 p.m. PT on Tuesday, Dec. 15. For most of the world, this means that you will be playing the new season on Wednesday, Dec. 16, so be sure to check your specific time zone to know when you will be able to see everything that is released.

Rebirth Island Arrives in Warzone

One of the most important parts of the new season is the new map released for the game known as Rebirth Island. We already have Verdansk based on Modern Warfare, the former main game that Warzone connected, and now we have its map inspiration from Black Ops Cold War.

Rebirth Island is a new map for Warzone, but it isn’t entirely new for the veteran players out there who have been part of the Black Ops community for a while now. It is a new and improved version of the Alcatraz prison island map in Cold War’s predecessor Black Ops 4.

The fan-favorite Blackout battle royale map was unique for being different from the normal map since it was much smaller than the normal map and more contained. This same smaller style of gameplay is coming to Warzone with the Rebirth Island experience.

Set in the 1980s, like most of Cold War, this version of the island has been repurposed by the base commander Stitch, who is also a significant part of the current new season. Wanting revenge against Adler, who you will likely know from the campaign, this facility is there for the creation of Nova 6 gas.

This half prison, half chemical bioweapons facility has dozens of areas for you to explore, from the laboratories to the barracks to the decontamination areas to the hilltop prison block and much more. It seems like this will be a slightly different version of the island than we saw in Black Ops 4.

The playstyle of the Rebirth Island map will be different from normal Verdansk battle royale as well. If you are not a fan of the massive maps and player counts in Verdansk or want something to mix up the standard formula, Rebirth Island might be for you.

It will be similar to the mini-battle royale game mode that was pretty popular when it was around in the game with intense, close combat mayhem with a much smaller player count than the 150 or so in normal Warzone battle royale.

The lowered player count will come in a few planned playlists, including trios and quads. We don’t know if duos or solos will be in Rebirth Island, but we hope so since they both would be very welcome in a smaller Warzone experience like this one.

New Warzone Challenges and Gulag Experiences

With the release of Rebirth Island in Call of Duty Warzone Season 1, there are some new challenges and Gulag experiences that you will be able to check out as well. There will be a special limited-time event that will offer 16 challenges for players to complete in the new season.

The challenges haven’t been detailed yet but will likely revolve around the new Rebirth Island if we had to guess. Through these 16 challenges, you will be able to earn various calling cards, charms, emblems, stickers, a special light machine gun weapon blueprint known as Noxious, and other exciting secrets to uncover.

For those of you who like the Gulag or the older Verdansk map, you might be happy to know that it is changing some with this new season. Verdansk will have a new Gulag experience to change what you are used to with this respawn system.

It will remain the same where you are sent here upon your first death and have the chance to battle for the opportunity to come back to the match again. But the difference is that now the arena in which you battle in the Gulag will be a brand new one.

The original Gulag arena was pretty straightforward and cookie-cutter, but this new arena takes inspiration from a fan-favorite map: Nuketown. The one on one rules are similar to what they were before, but the arena is based on the Nuketown map inside a secret training facility.

It has the original map’s locales but is confined mainly to the central part of the arena in between the two houses. Their interiors and the backyard areas are barricaded off, so you only have that parked bus central area.

You can weave in and around the parked bus and truck to meet up with your target or climb to get a sight of the arena. As usual, it will be the last person standing or whoever grabs the overtime flag.

The same rules apply to the new Rebirth Island Gulag experience. That’s right; it will have a different arena for this Gulag system from the one used in Verdansk. Deep below the prison block’s surface in Rebirth Island is an ominous new arena where you will battle for a chance to come back.

It is centered around a chamber where the two prisoners in each duel start at the end of one of two hallways that run parallel to the center room where you can meet up and fight. The two paths offer quick access to your opponent to take them, but it comes with a catch.

There are metal detectors on both of them that will go off once one of the operators passes through, alerting your enemy to your location. These interesting traversal methods will make it so that no two duels have to go the same way.

Everything You Need to Know About Resurgence

If that isn’t enough for you, there is a brand new game mode for battle royale that will launch in Call of Duty Warzone Season 1. It is known as Resurgence and will be available this week at launch as an exclusive game mode for the new Rebirth Island.

If you are looking for a chance to check out the new map in a less competitive and Gulag-centric version, this might be for you. Presumably a limited time mode but not revealed or not, Resurgence will feature the Rebirth Island map in a heavier respawn-centric version.

There is no Gulag available here, so respawns will, instead, focus on a simple rebirth countdown. Once the countdown reaches zero, you will thrust back into the match immediately so long as you have a teammate who is still alive and kicking down below.

But if no one is alive on your squad, your respawns are up, and you are out of the game. Taking out an enemy will give the opposing team an advantage. Every time you take someone out, it will flash briefly and let you know where the rest of their teammates are so you can finish them off.

It becomes a daring cat-and-mouse chase of trying to stay alive long enough for your teammates to come back into the match while also making sure to take out opponents when you know where they are before the person you just eliminated comes back.

Attack Helicopter and New Content Items

A new vehicle is coming to both Rebirth Island and Verdansk in Season 1, known as the attack helicopter. This powerful flying vehicle will be a tremendous boon for teams who can secure it in matches. The normal helicopter was already a powerful asset, but this takes it up a notch.

You can fly around in the helicopter that is similar in speed and maneuvering to the original. Still, the difference is that it has a minigun mounted onto both sides of the vehicle. These can be controlled by one of the squad members who is riding along with you.

So, you can ride around the map fast while a teammate is raining down bullets upon the enemies who are unfortunate enough to be below, instead of merely using your normal weapons. It will be a strong vehicle and asset for winning matches, so watch out for these attack helicopters.

While you are in the middle of matches, you will find that there are now over 30 Cold War weapons that are launching in Warzone in Season 1. Unless a weapon needs a particular challenge, all Cold War primary and secondary weapons, including blueprint variants, will be available in Warzone from now on.

The new Season 1 weapons like Groza assault rifle and the MAC 10 SMG will be available in both games for use once you have reached the specific battle pass tiers needed to unlock them. They are free, so don’t worry about having to own the paid battle pass.

How Warzone and Black Ops Cold War Connect in Season 1

On the meta side of things, this new season means that Black Ops Cold War and Warzone will formally connect for the next year or so. The progression system will be shared across both games, allowing you to earn experience in one game and still see results from it in the other game, and so on.

Whatever level you reach in Cold War will be reflected in Warzone and vice versa. If you earn some XP from winning a battle royale match, you will see any unlockables or level increases when you next boot up Cold War. This isn’t just for your level but your battle pass tiers as well.

The same battle pass is used for both games, so play whatever you want. You will be able to progress through it to earn some free items, weapons, cosmetics, and others, no matter if you wish to pay for the paid battle pass or not. This also extends to weapons, so using your favorite weapons in either game will unlock new attachments, levels, and camos for them.

We covered most everything that you can get in Call of Duty Warzone Season 1 but if you want to find out what new items are going to be available in the store for purchase and other minor changes, be sure to check out the full list of new content this season right here
