Call of Duty Project Cortez Rumored to Be Modern Warfare 2
Call of Duty Vanguard is the next mainline entry in the long-running, annualized franchise, but it is far from the only game to look forward to from Activision at this time. We can already expect and predict next year’s game. It looks like it is known as Call of Duty Project Cortez right now.
Next Call of Duty Game Is Rumored to Be Project Cortez
Project Cortez is reportedly the codename for the next mainline Call of Duty title and one that is rumored to be the next in one of the most popular sub-series for the franchise. According to rumors, the next Call of Duty game in 2022 is going by this name while in development.
According to known industry insider Tom Henderson on Twitter, Project Cortez will be known as Modern Warfare 2 when it releases in 2022. Because of this, it is easy to assume that the next game in the series after Vanguard will be developed by none other than series founders Infinity Ward.
This Modern Warfare 2 entry (official name still pending) will be a sequel to the reboot of the Modern Warfare series released in 2019. This will be great news for fans of the original Modern Warfare 2019 release, as many fans and critics heralded it as one of the best in a long time.
This is not an unexpected rumor at all, but what is surprising about the timing of this Project Cortez and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 rumor is the timing of everything. After all, Vanguard is not even out yet. The current beta experience for it is also not even finished, and we are already getting rumors about the next game in the series.
Rumor Is Supported by Other Sources
Typically in cases like these, it is usually around the beginning of the new year when the rumors and leaks start to circulate about the next Call of Duty game. This has happened in the past. Players had to wait a rather long time actually to get the game’s official announcement.
However, we are still just under two months from the release of Call of Duty Vanguard. We already hear about Project Cortez or Modern Warfare 2, which is interesting. However, before you disregard this rumor as false, it was corroborated by the website VGC.
According to VGC, the news that Henderson shared on Twitter “matches what VGC has heard from its sources.” This adds some extra layers to the rumor mill, seemingly giving some weight to the idea that the next Call of Duty will, indeed, be a sequel to Modern Warfare 2019.
To make matters even more interesting, the name Project Cortez is a title previously revealed in the GeForce Now games leak where a ton of unannounced games were revealed in the backend of that streaming service, including this supposed Modern Warfare 2 entry.
The leaked Project Cortez title was associated in the backend of the service with Activision and developer Infinity Ward, which makes sense since it was also the creator of the original Modern Warfare 2019 and is fully expected to be the next developer in the Call of Duty franchise.
This Lines Up With What We Know
The series usually follows a three-year development window where a different team steps up to the plate each year. It continues on this pattern like clockwork. The only exception was 2020, in which development issues with Raven Software and lead developer Sledgehammer Games required Treyarch to step back up to the plate with Black Ops Cold War only two years after releasing Black Ops 4.
That said, Sledgehammer has stepped back into the action with Vanguard this year to set the cycle, hopefully, back into place, which means that Infinity Ward should be the developer of the next title scheduled to release in late 2022.
Overall, the rumors of a Modern Warfare 2 are as unsurprising as they come, with many in the community already expecting this to be the next Call of Duty game after Vanguard. After all, the success of 2019’s Modern Warfare was quite great for Activision and Infinity Ward alike, even leading to the release of Warzone later on using the same engine.
We Would Want to See a Different Game From Infinity Ward
This feels like the safest bet for the next Call of Duty game, so I would not be surprised if these rumors are true. Personally for me, though, this is a bit disappointing to see as I would like to see Infinity Ward try something else besides yet another Modern Warfare title, similar to my feelings with Treyarch and Black Ops.
This is especially so for Modern Warfare, which was beautiful, had some solid multiplayer maps, included a great singleplayer story campaign, and introduced interesting new large-scale game modes.
I’ve mentioned it before here, but I am not a fan of the tactical sprint-style gameplay and gunplay that Modern Warfare 2019 has that has carried over into the Warzone and now Vanguard. This is not my gameplay style, and I do not wish to see it continue, honestly.
Because of that, I would prefer to see a sequel to Infinite Warfare, which I know was a mixed game in the community, but honestly one of my favorites ever. Even having a much-improved sequel to Ghosts could be interesting and a great callback to that title, as this will be Infinity Ward’s first foray on the new generation of hardware.
That said, we still have a ways to go to find out more about Project Cortez or Modern Warfare 2 since Vanguard is still not out just yet. Call of Duty Vanguard is set for release on November 5, 2021, and we have plenty of more coverage of it planned for the near future.
