Call of Duty League Jerseys Now Available for Purchase, Fans Dislike Them
The Call of Duty League is an exciting endeavor that many players and fans in the community are getting ready for. With only a week left to go before the launch of the inaugural season of the franchise and city-based esports league, the hype is real.
Call of Duty League Jerseys Now Available
In honor of the upcoming launch weekend in Minnesota, Activision has announced the official Call of Duty League jerseys that are available right now for purchase. If you are a fan of a particular team or player who is on a team, you can show your support by buying one of the replica jerseys.
If you are interested in checking out the official Call of Duty League jerseys for yourself and buy one, you can head to the league’s official shop right here. Each jersey isn’t the cheapest around as they are sold for around $74.99 USD, which is quite a pricey jersey.
All 12 of the teams that are in the league have two jerseys that are officially theirs. One jersey is mostly black with their logo, name, and main team color featured on it. This is the away jersey that each team has and is an exact replica of the ones that they use when they are at someone else’s home.
On the other hand, we have the home jerseys that each team has that is mostly white with an almost exact same design otherwise compared to the away jersey. But because they are sold separately, you are looking at a massive $150 USD or so if you want to have both jerseys for your favorite team.
For the most part, the Call of Duty League jerseys themselves are exactly what you would expect and barely pass the minimum requirements for being a team jersey. It is because of this, though, that many players and fans in the community are not happy with the jersey designs.
On the official shop’s page for the jerseys, we can see what the materials are that the jerseys are made of. The material is 100% polyester, giving it that classic jersey feel to it. Each jersey has perforated sleeves and side panels for allowing air to pass through it.
They have screen print graphics, which we hope are designed in a way that they will stay on even after years of continuous use. They all have short sleeves as there are no long-sleeve options for the jerseys at this time, unfortunately.
These are, of course, the officially licensed jerseys (more on that complicated scenario in a bit) but have been imported and have the brand Outerstuff attached to them. Overall from the description, the quality of the jerseys seem to be legit and are likely very similar to the actual apparel that the players use.
Fans Aren’t Happy With Jersey Designs
But the issue that many fans have with these Call of Duty League jerseys is that Activision made them in this fairly stale way. The worst part is that it didn’t have to be this way either as each team previously had the opportunity to make their own merchandise until recently.
At the beginning of the year, Activision took over all merchandising for the league, which is understandable since it is the company running it and owning the game that it is about. However, this led to the teams having to give up their own designs, which many fans preferred over these new ones.
All of the Call of Duty League jerseys follow the same cookie cutter design where you know exactly where the name will be, the logo, primary color stripe, and so on. Many fans in the community posted on Twitter and other social media platforms about their disdain for the official designs.
One particular case was Alpaca, a designer for the pro esports team 100 Thieves who noted in response to a heated thread on Twitter that he is “extremely” disappointed by the designs, especially “the creative talent some of these teams have.” Other players and fans have responded on Twitter, noting their own dislike.
One particular fan noted in the thread that the designs are “uninspired and overpriced”, and that they were much better when the teams were the ones who designed them. On the other hand, some of the players in the league itself responded with their own positive vibes regarding the Call of Duty League jerseys.
Toronto Ultra player Anthony “Methodz” Zinni posted on Twitter that he thinks that the Toronto jerseys are “clean.” Another Twitter user responded to the pro player and asked him to be honest if he really thinks that they couldn’t do more with the overall designs.
To which Methodz states that it is the inaugural season of the league and that “there will be plenty of years to come.” It is possible that this is just the first iteration of the jerseys and that designs could improve over the next couple of years, especially if fans express their dislike of them.
Perhaps the strangest part of the jerseys is the fact that they are all, at their base, either black or white; that’s it. This somewhat renders the whole point of having a team color kind of mute. Other esports leagues like the Overwatch League and physical sports league do things differently.
A team will have a specific color that is designated to them and the primary color of the jersey will typically whatever that color is. It does seem rather strange to force every team to have the same base colors for both jerseys. Even soccer is known for at least letting teams have this happen for one of their jerseys.
On the league shop, players can find other products available besides the controversial jerseys like hoodies, t-shirts for the launch weekend, and more. The league will begin formally in one week on January 24 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
The ROKKR will be hosting all 12 teams in the launch weekend where the first matches will kick off before having the other cities rotate who is at home after that. Players can tune in and watch the launch weekend live January 24-26. Stay tuned for more details on how to watch it.
