Call of Duty 2020 Title Rumored to Be Called Cold War

by in Call of Duty | May, 20th 2020

Multiple leaks recently surfaced at the same time to come together to reportedly confirm the Call of Duty 2020 title. Fans have been eagerly awaiting the official announcement of the 2020 mainline game and it looks like the title of it is rumored to be called Black Ops Cold War.

Call of Duty 2020 Title Reportedly Revealed

Interestingly enough, this rumor looks to be one of the most substantial and believable ones that we have seen thus far for the Call of Duty 2020 title. According to two different sources, the next mainline game in the series will be the Black Ops Cold War soft reboot that fans have been wanting.

The first of these leaks come from Twitter user Okami who posted a simple image and nothing else. The image is of the original box art for the first Call of Duty: Black Ops game in the series. Released nearly 10 years ago, the game went on to be one of the biggest in the whole franchise.

What is interesting about this possible leak from Okami is that the image is not just of the box art from the original Black Ops 1 game, but it features a name change that shows the rumored Call of Duty 2020 title. According to the data miner, the game will be called Black Ops Cold War.

This is a rather interesting title, to say the least, but before we get into that, there is another leak that reaffirms that this is the rumored Call of Duty 2020 title. Eurogamer posted its article about the leak, noting that its sources have given the same information that Okami has.

What We Know About the Next Game

With these two leaks put together, it is looking increasingly likely that the Call of Duty 2020 title is going to be Black Ops Cold War. This is interesting for many reasons. For one, this does support the claims from earlier this year that stated this game would be a reboot.

According to many sources, the title was being mainly developed by Treyarch, the Black Ops creators, and would be a soft reboot of the possibly most popular sub-series in the franchise. This would be similar to what Infinity Ward did last year with Modern Warfare.

By far, the most intriguing thing about this, though, isn’t that it is likely true, but the title itself. According to both of these leaks, it won’t be going the way of the Modern Warfare reboot where it simply shared the same title as the original Call of Duty 4 game.

Instead, it will have its unique title that will set itself slightly apart by being known as Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. What is interesting about this, though, is that this is a first for the series. We haven’t seen a title like this really at all throughout the entire franchise.

The Call of Duty 2020 Title Is Weird

Sure, many of the games have had subtitles like Modern Warfare, Advanced Warfare, and so on but sequels would just add a number usually. In this case, this soft reboot not only has reportedly the Black Ops subtitle as expected, but a second subtitle as well in the form of Cold War.

This is odd, to say the least, and could indicate something that will possibly change between now and the official announcement of this new game. It does seem odd, at least to this author, to have the game be called Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.

It seems somewhat redundant for that title to be like that as it would seem unnecessary to have both names and because it feels less like a reboot this way. It would be rather cool to see the game drop the Black Ops title entirely and simply be known as Cold War.

In this way, it would be similar to what Sledgehammer Games did with World War 2 when it released its game in 2017. But stranger things have certainly happened in the world and it could very well be possible that the title of the 2020 Call of Duty game is Black Ops Cold War.

More Rumored Details and When We Could Hear About Black Ops Cold War

Regardless of that, the important thing to note beyond the title is the fact that this will likely bring back the singleplayer campaign that was missing from the last Black Ops game in the series with the fourth entry. It also likely confirms that Treyarch is the main developer.

This is likely the case after rumors suggested that Sledgehammer Games, along with Raven Software, were supposed to release the new Call of Duty game this year. However, the two teams struggled to work together, which led to Treyarch having to step in and essentially save the day.

To further make it seem likely that this is a true rumor and that the next Call of Duty game is probably known as Black Ops Cold War, the same Okami who leaked this has been known to be right in the past. They were the same user who leaked the Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered game.

That leak turned out to be very true and, so, there is some credibility to this rumor. It does seem strange, though, that we have still yet to hear anything about the next Call of Duty game. It is standard for the new title to be announced in May with a release in the fall of that same year.

We are nearing the end of May and we have still not heard anything about the rumored Cold War game. There is usually a tease ahead of time where Activision reveals when the next game will be announced. Unfortunately, this has yet to happen either.

Next week will be the last full week of May, so it seems like the announcement would likely happen then but we haven’t heard anything. It would make sense for Activision to reveal the announcement date this week and then have the announcement itself be sometime next week.

If that is to be the case, we only have a few more days left this week for that to happen. Regardless, we have no doubts that the next Call of Duty game will release this year as Activision itself recently confirmed it. And it has teased some things like the 10th anniversary of Black Ops.

Earlier this week, Treyarch released a video in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Black Ops announcement, not the actual release. That seems like a weird time to celebrate since it isn’t the release date, so it seems like the real announcement is coming soon.
