Brussels to Host Headquarters of Esports Europe
Brussels is doing what they can to improve their stock as a technological source in Europe. This recent news could undoubtedly be a significant step in that direction. We learned today that Brussels secured the role of headquarters of Esports Europe.
In April, 15 esports federations came together across Europe. Several stakeholder organizations also joined in. The Berlin Declaration was born of this and an intent to organize European esports.
Esports Is the Way of Life
Sooner or later, people have to accept that esports is a real sport. Online multiplayer games are getting more prominent than ever. And, there are millions and millions of dollars available to players who prove their skill.
A call for applications was put out in September for the headquarters of Esports Europe, and it looks like Brussels is the winner. They came out on top due to the proximity of European and international political institutions and associations. Having several esports industry stakeholders there doesn’t hurt either.
Pascal Smet, Secretary of State of the Brussels-Capital Region discussed this announcement:
“I am pleased and proud that Brussels can put itself on the map. Our capital is small on a global scale but proved that thinking’ out of the box’ is rewarding. Brussels keeps on growing as a tech capital, inside and outside of Europe. Which is beneficial for the city and the people of Brussels.”
The Impact of Esports Europe
There are 2,250 other international associations in Brussels, so they’ll be in good company. I’m always curious about things like this, even if I’m not European. It makes me curious because then I wonder if DreamHack and ESL will be under the banner of Esports Europe.
Will Esports Europe be a governing body for esports across the continent? Will it wind up affecting players who want to compete in other places like America?
According to their website, they want to “bring a positive, democratic force to esports in Europe,” and that’s a pretty awesome idea. Ideally, this will bring a federation that will help esports players become known and make a living wage doing something they love.
There are too many esports players with incredible skills that barely get by. I’m sure this is no less true in Europe than America. You can read the “Esports Vision” for Esports Europe in this link.
