Bad News for Apex Legends Replay Mode

by in Apex Legends | Jul, 13th 2021

The Apex Legends fan badly wants a replay mode for the game. This way, fans/players can look back on their matches, or could make it easier to upload/show off their greatest plays. It’s a popular feature across games like PUBG and Fortnite, but what about Apex Legends? As of right now, Apex Legends has no Replay Mode, but could it actually happen? The players want it, but we’ve got some pretty bad news on that front. This comes from John Larson, a balance designer in the game, that we’re not likely going to see happen.

Signs Aren’t Looking Good:

John Larson recently showed up on the Apex Uncut podcast, with Zach Mazer (Pro Player) and The_FortniteGuy (Content Creator) to discuss Apex Legends at large. They discuss balance, some changes, what it’s like working for Respawn, and in addition, the Replay Mode. One of the questions from the listeners was of course, Replay Mode.

John Larson said this specifically about the concept:

“That would be quite an undertaking from a dev side of things, and I’m not sure the warrants it, at least at this point in time. So, I would not promise anything on that front.”

Sure, Replay Mode is a great idea, there’s no argument from us there. If it were easy to do, it would be worthwhile, but it doesn’t sound like it would be. It sounds like the reason for Replay Mode not showing up might be the same reasons that Killcams aren’t in the game. The idea is that players could use these to tell their allies where someone who killed them was located. The game engine wasn’t designed for these kinds of features, so backtracking to try and add them in is apparently, very difficult.

It’s not impossible though. Apex Legends wasn’t designed for crossplay, but we’re still getting it. Perhaps Respawn doesn’t see the appeal for Replay Mode. It may also add undue stress to the servers, with all this extra information being stored, on top of people using it as a tactical advantage in-game, esports, or otherwise. It’s not completely out of the realm of possibility, but right now, it doesn’t sound like we can expect Apex Legends bringing in the mode.
