Atlanta FaZe Still Undefeated, Team to Watch in Call of Duty League
It isn’t often that you have a team in sports or esports that goes undefeated, reigning champion over everyone else without a match in sight. However, that is currently happening in the Call of Duty League with one team to watch during this inaugural season: Atlanta FaZe.
Atlanta FaZe Is Still Undefeated After Call of Duty League Atlanta Win
From the offset of the first season, players and the community were confident about was Atlanta FaZe, and for a good reason. With one of the strongest rosters around plus the backing of one of the biggest esports organizations in the world, this is no surprise.
However, we don’t think anyone predicted that after the third main event in the Call of Duty League, Atlanta FaZe would still go undefeated. The renowned team has not lost a single match and will likely not do so soon.
In addition to this, FaZe is the only team remaining in the league, which is still going strong with no losses to their name. Their home area hosted the latest event this past weekend and they didn’t back down.
FaZe successfully defended their home location, becoming the first team in the league to do so. It comes after the Home Series London where the Royal Ravens did their best but, ultimately fell short to the other popular team Chicago Huntsmen.
However, this didn’t stop Atlanta FaZe from holding its ground against the likes of the Huntsmen and many more to claim its home territory. The undefeated streak is far from the only crazy story to come out of the recent weekend event.
Home Series Weekend Atlanta Details
The Home Series Weekend Atlanta, the second event during the first season of the Call of Duty League, took place February 22-23.
Like that event, eight teams competed in the Atlanta tournament, despite there being 12 teams in total in the league. Some teams, like the Los Angeles Guerrillas, sat out of this event. Other teams like OpTic Gaming Los Angeles had their chance to step back into the ring finally.
Here are the eight teams part of the recent Home Series Weekend Atlanta:
- Minnesota Rokkr
- Paris Legion
- London Royal Ravens
- Florida Mutineers
- Chicago Huntsmen
- Toronto Ultra
- OpTic Gaming Los Angeles
- Atlanta FaZe
Like the previous Home Series Weekend event, the eight teams were split into two groups. The two groups participated in matches on the first day, competing until two teams emerged from each group as the teams to advance to Day 2.
On Day 2, the four remaining teams competed in a simple tournament bracket style with only three matches which determined the overall winner of the Home Series Atlanta. Read on for the full detailed results of everything that led to FaZe’s impressive home victory.
Day 1 Results: Group Stage
On Day 1, two groups made up the Home Series Atlanta event. Minnesota Rokkr, Paris Legion, Chicago Huntsmen, and Toronto Ultra were Group A. While not the most exciting group, there were some interesting players here like Rokkr and Huntsmen.
By far, the more wildcard and exciting group was Group B with London Royal Ravens, Florida Mutineers, home team Atlanta FaZe, and OpTic Gaming LA. The Mutineers had a lot to prove in the event given past matches while the Royal Ravens were hot off their own home event.
The group play kicked off with the first match of the event from Group A where the Minnesota Rokkr squared off against the Paris Legion. Both teams are generally considered good and relatively unknown still at this point.
Like all other matches in the series, it is a best of five rounds. The teams competed in various maps and game modes to see who would get to three points or the best of five rounds. Though Paris Legion started the match right with a win in Hardpoint on Gun Runner, it didn’t last long.
Minnesota Rokkr took a hard loss and improved from it in the following rounds of the match. They won three rounds in a row to take the first match of the group and had an early lead for making it to the tournament bracket.
The first match of the second group featured the former home team London Royal Ravens and the Florida Mutineers. The two teams seemed similar in strength, or at least it seemed that way until they went against one another.
The Royal Ravens had a lot to prove after their loss in their hometown, and they didn’t back down either. They won three rounds to one against Florida Mutineers, matching Rokkr’s impressive match win previously.
In the second match for Group A, the then-undefeated Chicago Huntsmen expected to crush Toronto Ultra, but it didn’t quite go as planned. They secured the first-round victory, but the Ultra didn’t back down and won the second.
This continued a back and forth between the two teams with each one swapping out victories with one another. Unfortunately, the early lead from the Huntsmen did mean that they secured the match victory but not before being challenged in one of their closest matches yet.
Finally, the Atlanta FaZe got their debut in the Home Series Weekend against the OpTic Gaming LA, another team yet to prove itself. FaZe crushed them in a three to nothing sweep match. With that concluded, the clear leads in each group were apparent.
However, that soon changed. The second round of matches in the group stage featured Minnesota Rokkr and the still undefeated Chicago Huntsmen. This team won its first match. However, the Huntsmen continued to prove their excellence by beating them three to one and becoming the first team to move on to no surprise from anyone.
From there, the Paris Legion took on the Toronto Ultra and the Legion won three rounds to one. Despite the surprising effort from the Ultra against the Huntsmen, they could secure a victory and became the first team to be guaranteed to not move into the tournament bracket.
The two home teams at this time, London Royal Ravens and Atlanta FaZe, then faced off in an exciting match. FaZe ultimately proved itself the superior home team thus far in the season and won it three rounds to one. This secured the FaZe as only the second team to move on.
The final match of the second part of the group stage saw Florida Mutineers take on the OpTic Gaming LA, two teams hot off of losses. The Mutineers didn’t hold back, winning the match-three rounds to one while pushing OpTic Gaming out of the competition.
This resulted in a couple of ties that needed to get broken. What is interesting is that both matches were rematches with one of them having a surprise finish.
Minnesota Rokkr faced off against Paris Legion in a rematch from earlier on in the day. Legion put up much more of a fight than in their first match, swapping victories back and forth. However, this led to Rokkr still winning with three rounds to two and moved them onto the tournament bracket.
The final match of the group stage was the most surprising and exciting of them all. Many expected it to, much like Rokkr versus Legion, play out as expected and have the Royal Ravens win again versus Florida Mutineers. However, this was not the case at all.
The Mutineers came out swinging, winning the first round of the match. From there, the London Royal Ravens won a round and the classic round-swapping began with each team switching off who would win the next one.
But because of the early lead from the Florida Mutineers, they upset the London Royal Ravens and won the match-three rounds to two. This secured their place in the tournament bracket. It showed they could improve upon their mistakes better than most teams.
Day 2 Results: Crazy Upsets in Tournament Bracket
The Home Series Atlanta event continued on Sunday with the tournament bracket between the four remaining teams. The excitement didn’t stop here with surprising upsets that we certainly didn’t see coming this early in the season.
The first match was Atlanta FaZe versus the Minnesota Rokkr. Since they haven’t had a chance to battle it out yet it was a highly anticipated match. It proved to be very intense and close. Though FaZe was the home team, Rokkr came out swinging and won the first round in Hardpoint on Hackney Yard.
From there, Rokkr didn’t relent as they won yet another round in Search and Destroy on Piccadilly. At this point, many counted out FaZe as getting eliminated from their home event. But the team improved and won the next round to bring it to two to one.
And the craziest part is that FaZe didn’t stop its onslaught. They made a comeback with three round wins in a row, upsetting Rokkr and winning the match three to two. This secured their place in the finals of their home event.
Just when we thought it couldn’t get crazier, the next match happened. Florida Mutineers took on the still undefeated Chicago Huntsmen in a match that we all counted out the Mutineers in. The Huntsmen quickly winning the first round of the match further proved this.
It was proven even more by the second round where the Huntsmen won yet another round. However, the Mutineers weren’t going to let this team win another landslide victory. They came back in the third round and won it. Then they proceeded to upset the number one team in the league and win the next two rounds, becoming the first team ever to beat them and make it to the finals.
The finals of the home team Atlanta versus Florida Mutineers was, understandably, not that exciting compared to the previous matches. Though the Mutineers gave it their in previous matches, FaZe wasn’t going to back down from its undefeated streak, unlike the Huntsmen and went on to win this match-three rounds to none. This secured their victory as the championships of the event and earn them some points.
What’s Next for the Call of Duty League?
Next up for the league is the next Home Series Weekend in two weeks. It will be the jointly hosted weekend by the OpTic Gaming LA and Los Angeles Guerrillas where eight of the teams will compete to see who comes out on top.
Here are the eight teams that will be competing:
- Atlanta
- Florida Mutineers
- Minnesota Rokkr
- Seattle Surge
- Dallas Empire
- New York Subliners
- Los Angeles Guerrillas
- OpTic Gaming LA
The fan favorites look to be the Dallas Empire and FaZe with the Minnesota Rokkr not falling too far behind. With the upsets that the Mutineers got during Home Series Weekend Atlanta, we wouldn’t be surprised if they secured a comfortable placement in this event. The Los Angeles joint Home Series Weekend takes place March 7-8.
