What led to Asmongold ultimately beginning his Twitch streaming career? Some people do it because they want to play games online, and others because they’re already esports superstars. Asmongold’s reason to get into Twitch and start his streaming career is for a far more tragic story. He ultimately became one of the biggest names on the platform from humble beginnings, but desperation started. He hit some pretty major lows before coming to Twitch and doing his best to make a living. It seems like it turned out okay for him in terms of success, though.

In a recent stream, Asmongold talked about what led him to stream in the first place. A great deal of it came from the fact that he couldn’t take a job outside his home. He needed to take care of his mother, who had health issues that required constant care. She had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and so she needed Asmongold at home.

“That’s why I started making YouTube videos. I couldn’t get a job. I could barely go to school because of that.” It wasn’t doing much financially, though, which led to Asmongold having his health problems. “Ironically, most people say they didn’t start streaming for money. I did. All my teeth were falling out because I could never afford to go to the dentist or anything. They were getting so bad that it was just terrible.”

When he was told it would take $50,000 to fix his teeth, it was a devastating blow to the young Asmongold. He talked about being at the lowest of lows, “I went home with that bill, and I wanted to kill myself. I was like, there’s no way I can ever get above that. This is it. This is the end of my life.”

It’s a heartbreaking story, but it does wind up having a happy ending, as we all know. Asmongold began his Twitch streaming career because YouTube wasn’t making him enough money. So that’s why it all began on Twitch. He looked back on it, glad his teeth were falling out because while it was difficult, it led to him going to Twitch and all of the success he wound up having. He overcame adversity and became one of the most popular streamers on Twitch. He may be controversial on occasion and is never shy about speaking his mind, but it’s clear he wound up incredibly successful, despite his painful beginnings.
