Apex Legends Dev Explains Why Hammerpoint Was Removed
The Hammerpoint hop-up in Apex Legends is sadly being removed for Season 9 of the Battle Royale. It’s caused quite a few people to become wildly upset, as it’s incredibly popular. There’s a lot to be excited about in Apex Legends Season 9 though – Valkyrie, a new permanent mode (Arenas), and more. There are two new hop-ups being added in the form of Shatter Caps and Deadeye’s Tempo, but we’re saying goodbye to Hammerpoint and Skullpiercer. But why?
All For Balance
Fans of the Mozambique are no doubt upset about the disappearance of Hammerpoint. The concern has built up to a fever pitch, but there’s finally an answer, thanks to one of the Apex devs. Through Reddit, we know why Apex Legends’ Hammerpoint hop-up was removed. It’s usable with a pair of weapons (Mozambique and P2020), and it increases their damage output a great deal. It makes these guns far more viable.
This all comes down to balance. Since both the Mozambique and P2020 guns are being buffed, keeping the Hammerpoint would require it to be nerfed. Nerfing it would really kill its purpose in the game as a high-risk, high-reward hop-up. Here’s what one of the Respawn designers had to say:
“I wrote a big comment on it above, but it was mostly as a result of the P2020 and Moz buffs. Long story short, because of buffing the base weapons, we would have to nerf the hopup’s power so it wasn’t OP — it’s a very strong hopup, the big weaknesses are what keep it in check. Once you do that, it’s a pretty lame hopup, because it takes an OK gun and makes it a little better, but not in a way that would make you play differently (just use moz the whole time, no need to swap, not worth swapping to the hopup gun if another gun is out after you break shields, etc.). The hopup only really works as a high risk high reward item, so it just didn’t work well anymore. We will be re-evaluating it and trying to see what else we can do with it for the future!”
So this? This makes absolute sense. You could say the P2020 is weaker because it’s “stronger and slower” now, but I like that as a concept. We’ll just have to see if the Mozambique is going to be as good without the Hammerpoint now that it’s being removed in Apex Legends. While it does make sense on paper, it’s not clear what the removal will do the game. Perhaps, if Mozambique suffers after this change, we’ll see Hammerpoint back sooner or later. Or it’ll be the recipient of more buffs! Only time can tell.
