Activision Has All Studios Working on Call of Duty

It has now been revealed that the future of Call of Duty is looking pretty bright as the efforts towards the franchise are more significant than ever before. This is since we now know that all of the studios that Activision owns are now Call of Duty studios.

Toys for Bob Joins the Call of Duty Studios

How we know this is not because of the publisher itself but rather one of these Activision-owned studios. Toys for Bob is one of the most popular and beloved developers at Activision right now. However, it looks like the studio’s responsibilities are growing with some recent changes.

On Twitter, the Toys for Bob Twitter account noted that it is “proud to support development” for the Call of Duty franchise moving forward. With the addition of this studio to the huge repertoire of the Call of Duty development studios, every studio Activision owns is now working on the series.

Toys for Bob is specifically working on the Call of Duty Warzone game. The battle royale title will have the studio now helping with it, or at least for the time being. The studio noted that it is now supporting development for the third season of Warzone.

As you may already know, Season 3 is already out for Call of Duty Warzone. It seems that Toys for Bob had something to do with this. The studio looks forward to “more to come,” hinting that we may see even more from this studio in the battle royale title in the future.

Community Response Has Been Fairly Negative

Raven Software, the lead development studio behind Call of Duty Warzone, noted that it is glad to have the studio working alongside it on this game for the future. Unfortunately, the downside of this situation is that the community response has been pretty negative, for the most part.

Just take a look at the comments on the tweet. You will see a good portion of negative comments from fans of Toys for Bob. While we won’t include some of the meaner comments out there, there are some understandable concerns from players about the future of Spyro and Crash.

If you know Toys for Bob, then you probably know it for the work it has done on both of those franchises. In 2018, it released both the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, rekindling the love and popularity of these beloved 3D platformers.

Both of those trilogies did quite well for themselves, especially in the case of the Crash Bandicoot trilogy. That game was enough to prompt the release of a brand new Crash game for the first time in a very long time known as Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time that came out last year.

What Toys for Bob Did in the Past

It’s About Time has seemingly done pretty well on its own. It was well-received by fans of the series and critics alike for being one of the best games in the series to date. It was able to not only have that strong 3D platformer gameplay that you would expect but in a forward-looking way that takes the series in a bright direction.

Before its hits with both Crash and Spyro, Toys for Bob was the team that made the Skylanders series. This was a rather intriguing franchise that started extremely strong but fizzled out pretty quickly after that, along with the entirety of the interactive toys in the video games genre, for the most part.

Before that, there weren’t too many exceptional games that the studio made, with its real popularity and success coming in the last decade. But right as it seems that it is going in a new direction with 3D platformers, we now get this news that it is joining the Call of Duty studios.

What does this mean for the future of the studio? Are the concerns that some players have well-founded? It is rather unclear at this point. There are reports (via GamesIndustry.biz) that the studio has experienced some layoffs simultaneously as this report.

It Looks Like There Haven’t Been Layoffs at Toys for Bob

However, an official comment from an Activision spokesperson revealed these reports are incorrect and that there hasn’t “been a reduction in personnel recently at the studio.” It is operating well and has some openings for full-time positions right now.

Moreover, the team is continuing to support Crash 4 as well as its recent support for Warzone. We will have to see for now as the reports were from contractors, which might be the reason for this concern. If the comment from Activision is to be believed, it seems that Toys for Bob is good for now.

Crash 4 isn’t going to lose support, but we do have to wonder what will happen with the series. If Crash did well enough, we imagine that Activision will continue the series. If there are enough employees in the studio, there shouldn’t be any issue with having two teams there.

One team works on the main projects, like the next Crash or Spyro or whatever else it will be in the future, while another team works on supporting Raven with Call of Duty Warzone. With this switch, Activision-owned (but not all of the Activision Blizzard-owned) developers are now Call of Duty studios.

This includes the other owned studios, like Raven, a support studio, and the main Warzone creators. Then there is the main Call of Duty developers of Infinity Ward, Treyarch, and Sledgehammer, who make the mainline games each year.

From there, we have Activision Shanghai, who made Call of Duty Online and likely supports in other ways now, and Demonware, who handles the servers. Then we have the former Transformers series developer High Moon Studios, who supports Beenox, known for its previous Spider-Man games. All in all, what is surprising is that it took this long for Toys for Bob to join in on the action with the franchise alongside everyone else.
