A New ‘League of Legends’ Mobile Version Surfaces Online

by in League of Legends | Aug, 28th 2019

Over the years, the rumors of a mobile League of Legends circulated online frequently. It seemed perfectly plausible, but without any concrete evidence it was hard to believe. The concept, while exciting on paper, seemed like a bafflingly huge undertaking. Some thought the game was too complex to be played on a smaller screen without any physical controls, and it was hard coming up with a counterargument.

But for the first time ever, a video showcasing a mobile version of League of Legends surfaced online, and it’s believable, to say the least.

Now, there are a couple of things that must be highlighted — things that give this whole video some credence. First, not all champions are playable. This would not only be reasonable but also practical. Adapting all 145 champions that are currently in-game is a gargantuan task and it would only make the mobile version exceedingly big and complex. Limiting the port to just a handful of well-known fan favorites would be for the best.

Secondly, the in-game user interface seems to be thought-out and adjusted to mobile-specific touch controls. In other words, they’ve made the full League of Legends experience mobile friendly; they’ve shrunk the core mechanics down and have left just the essentials.

It’s important to highlight that for this whole thing to be a success, you don’t really need to be playing League of Legends on your phone — you just need to feel like you’re doing so. And judging by this low-quality video, we can fairly say that they’ve done an admirable job.

There is, however, a bit too much information on the screen. This one fact could both be a red flag telling us that this is probably a fake, or it could mean that Tencent really tried to transfer over as much League-specific stuff as they possibly could. Both thoughts seem perfectly reasonable. This wouldn’t be the best or most optimal way to play League, but if you’re in a pinch it’ll suffice.

The sheer fact that most high-end mobile phones these days have humongous screens (and high-resolution displays) mean that there’s ample space that can be used. Still, hitting the right virtual button as the right time won’t be a pleasurable experience — those are just inherent flaws of mobile gaming.

If, however, you have a peripheral that you can attach to your phone and get additional physical controls, then this whole thing becomes infinitely more enjoyable.

Next up, we can see unique animations in the pick and ban phase — animations that aren’t present in the real game. This could mean that someone went out of their way to create an ultimate fake, but that would also be a bafflingly huge amount of work without any obvious benefit.

Arena of Valor

Perhaps the biggest reason why this could end being real is the fact that the map is different. For instance, there are no Nexus turrets in the base, just like in Arena of Valor — a mobile MOBA also made by Tencent.

So, we’re obviously seeing a “dumbed down” version of League, and if they could pull it off with Arena of Valor, there’s no reason why they couldn’t do it with League of Legends.

As we can see from the image above, they’ve managed to cram in everything you could possibly think of and yet the game is still perfectly playable. Whether or not someone deems this an enjoyable experience depends on personal preference, but no one can deny the fact that it’s an actual MOBA in your pocket.

Simply put, if it’s a fake it’s a darn good one. On one hand, it looks far too good and polished. As in “too good to be true.” On the other, if there was ever a developer that could throw money at the problem until it is solved, it must be Tencent. If they wanted to “port” League of Legends and make it playable on a refrigerator, they would probably succeed.

Regardless if this is real or not, we’re still light on details. That said, with such a high-profile leak, we’re bound to find out more sooner rather than later.
