2020 World Championship Play-In Stage Results
The Play-In stage of the 2020 LoL World Championship is officially over, and the results are pretty much in line with everyone’s expectations. Well, more or less, depending on how much faith you had in MAD Lions coming into the tournament.
We’ve seen many incredible games, and now that the dust has settled, one thing has become perfectly clear: the gap between major regions and wildcards has shrunk considerably. Obviously, the favorites (most of them, at least) still got out, but it was a much harder battle than anyone anticipated.
Saying that this Play-In stage was the most exciting one in Worlds history wouldn’t even begin to do it justice. If this were just a standalone tournament, we would’ve still been entertained beyond measure. That alone goes to show how good all competing teams were and how exciting (and flexible) today’s meta actually is.
Once Best of 5s rolled around, however, teams were put to the ultimate test. That’s when we saw just how much depth each team had, how well they could navigate the pick and ban phase, how they pivoted and adapted based on the way things developed, and how broad their champion pools were once push came to shove. As always, Best of 5s made a world of difference, and in the end, four teams stood above the rest: Team Liquid, LGD Gaming, PSG Talon, and the Unicorns of Love.
The fourth seed from North America and China, along with the PCS and LCL (formerly CIS) champions played the absolute best League of Legends throughout the 2020 Play-In stage, so to see them advance further into the tournament is a result that shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.
They were also given an invaluable opportunity to warm up and get rid of any potential stage fright. This, coupled with the fact that they could test things out and see what works for them and what doesn’t, should give them a slight edge over their competition once the Group Stage begins.
Then again, that might not end up being such a huge benefit given the level of competition that awaits. In any case, we should be in for one heck of a ride!
With the Play-Ins behind us, all four groups have now been finalized. Team Liquid has joined Group A, PSG Talon is in Group B, LGD Gaming in Group C, with the Unicorns of Love slotting into Group D. North American fans were able to breathe a sigh of relief as Liquid had a bit of luck on their side — they didn’t have to join DAMWON and JD Gaming in what many consider as the “group of death.”
LGD has also stepped up immensely as the 2020 Play-In stage progressed and it’ll be interesting to see how well they fare against Team SoloMid, Fnatic, and former LoL World Champions Gen.G as a result of being warmed up. Overall, there’s a lot on the line and we cannot wait for the Group Stage to begin! Unexpected twists and upsets are all but guaranteed.
If the Play-In stage was any indication, we should be in for the most exciting and competitive Worlds yet! The Groups Stage play will commence on October 3rd — check the schedule to see when your favorites are slated to play and make sure to tune in as you do not want to miss any of the action!
