2020 Golden Guardians Roster Announced
Not a lot of people wondered how the 2020 Golden Guardians roster would end up looking. They’re just not an overly exciting team, nor did they do anything over the last two years to warrant any hype or momentum. Now, sure, they did attain some success in 2019, but we can fairly classify those short moments as fleeting flashes of brilliance. For one reason or another, the Golden Guardians never actually stood a chance of leaving a mark in the grand scheme of things.
And we also knew that they were somewhat unwilling to invest in an expensive line-up, or compete with many of their adversaries when it came to spending ludicrous amounts of money in an attempt to lure in famous players. It’s hard to blame them either. There’s a fair number of permanent partners who invested a lot into their rosters and still failed to find success. So why not take the opposite approach? Why not build a roster from the ground-up, maybe sign a couple of up-and-coming rookies and “call it a day?”
Might as well give it a shot. Well, we finally know how the final 2020 Golden Guardians roster will look like. It’s a strange mix. That’s for sure.
A Look at the New Roster
- Top lane: Kevin “Hauntzer” Yarnell
- Jungle: Can “Closer” Çelik
- Mid lane: Greyson “Goldenglue” Gilmer
- AD carry: Victor “FBI” Huang
- Support: Yuri “Keith” Jew
The biggest surprise overall is the fact that they’ve retained their Academy (now LCS starter) AD carry FBI who wasn’t exactly stellar whenever he played this year. The fact that Keith decided to role-swap is also a fairly big surprise. Then again, he might as well look for a fresh start after failing to become a top-tier AD carry in years.
We still know that Hauntzer has what it takes to compete at the highest of levels. He’s not exactly as stellar as he was back in his Team SoloMid days, but he’s solid nonetheless. Closer is also a TCL champion and MVP, so he should be more than capable of carving out a spot for himself in the LCS. Goldenglue is a familiar name to many LCS regulars, but he has yet to prove his worth. The potential is certainly there, but we need to see him in action before we give him our full benefit of the doubt.
Finally, their bottom lane is… serviceable. But barely so. They might end up being a bit better than expected, but the odds certainly aren’t in their favor.
Overall, there’s not much to get excited about when it comes to the 2020 Golden Guardians roster. They’re not exactly abysmal on paper, but they’re certainly not going to be challenging Liquid for the LCS throne. Or for a spot in the playoffs it seems it like. That said, they might be able to surprise us, at least ever so slightly.
