Who is Valkyrae? A Look At 100 Thieves’ New Co-Owner
Who is Valkyrae? Known by Rachell Hoffstetter to some, Valkyrae is practically a household name, when you think of live streaming. The most-watched female streamer, winner of a Game Award, she’s come a long way from working regular jobs to becoming a Co-Owner of major esports org 100 Thieves. Though she got her start on Twitch, she’s signed with Youtube and has a major following there. She didn’t explode overnight, and it took a while to get where she is, but who is Valkyrae? A streamer who worked hard, and climbed to the top of the mountain.
Rise of the Valkyrae
What began as a hobby, sharing her love of gaming on Instagram, Valkyrae’s following began to swell. She was encouraged to stream, and thus, like everyone, she went to Twitch. Valkyrae would find a decent following on Twitch and then began to post her gaming content on YouTube as well. It helped that Valkyrae has a charming personality and is authentically herself in everything she does. Playing primarily popular games at the time (Bloodborne, Walking Dead, more), but when things really took off for Valkyrae, is when she began playing Fortnite. That was perhaps the biggest catalyst for people to stop asking ‘Who is Valkyrae?’ to ‘Wow, Valkyrae is incredible!’
Though Valkyrae’s Youtube channel began on 2014, she didn’t stream actively until 2018, it seems. Collaborations with other major streamers helped get her name out there (Cizzorz, Myth, Pokimane, among others). That’s not to say it’s the only way she made her name, far from it. Valkyrae was active, promoted herself, and created quality content. Being promoted by other large streamers certainly helps anyone out though. Valkyrae also became the first female streamer to join 100 Thieves, and after that made her next biggest move.
In January 2020, Valkyrae signed an exclusive contract with Youtube, ending her time on Twitch. Things weren’t going so well at the start though. While 5,000 viewers is amazing for streamers like you or me, she needed something else. The next step was to find the biggest viral sensation going: Among Us. Among Us was in that spot where everyone who was anyone was playing it, and collaborations with streamers like Disguised Toast, Sykkuno, Corpse Husband and more helped bring in the big-time numbers.
Finger on The Pulse of Streaming
The Among Us streams led to an average viewer count of 100,000, and that’s nothing at all to sneeze at. 2020 was a huge year for Valkyrae, thanks in large part to Among Us. But simply playing the game isn’t enough to keep people on every stream. It helps to have a personality that people can come back to and enjoy getting lost in. By 2021, Valkyrae became the most-watched female streamer of 2020, nearly doubling Pokimane’s views. She’s been everywhere and done everything, it seems. In 2020, she won Content Creator of the Year at the Game Awards for example. This year, she’s gone so far as to stream Among Us with Jimmy Fallon. Valkyrae’s always on the pulse of what’s big in the streaming world and capitalizes on it. That includes the Rust craze, being a large part of the Rust server RP streams.
Being able to be on such mainstream media events helps cross-pollinate. People who don’t watch Valkyrae might decide they need to and check out what else she’s doing on the content creation scene. Perhaps one of the largest things was being a part of the Machine Gun Kelly X CORPSE music video, “Daywalker”. It has nearly 13 million views, and as a key part of the music video, it’s a great way to get your name out there even further.
That leads us to this week. As a part of 100 Thieves, Valkyrae went from content creator to Co-Owner alongside Nadeshot and CourageJD. Valkyrae’s walked a long road to get to where she is, and it wasn’t always roses. It took years of hard work, and while someone’s always going to have something negative to say, but there’s no denying the hard work and talent of Valkyrae. That’s who Valkyrae is.
