Throughout the years, there have been plenty of characters who have joined the Super Smash Bros franchise from across all of video games. Each of the five (or six, depending on how you look at it) games in the series, there have been representation for so many video game companies.
Super Smash Bros Ultimate, of course, brings them all together under one roof with each and every character from the series’ past fighting as one. We have characters from Nintendo itself, The Pokemon Company, Sega, Capcom, Konami, Square Enix, Microsoft, and many other major companies.
Throughout the massive roster in the game, there are plenty of lesser known characters who have joined the game with little to no fanfare in the west or even perhaps in Japan, too. This could be for various reasons like coming from an obscure game or series, not having much relevance outside of Japan, and so on.
Well, such is the case with the upcoming fighter that is joining the roster of the game in Super Smash Bros Ultimate Terry Bogard. Terry Bogard is the latest character to join the series and one that confused players upon his initial announcement. Well, look no further as we are going to teach you everything you need to know about him.
If you are going to want to fight as Super Smash Bros Ultimate Terry Bogard in the game, you might want to know what this fighter is all about. Who is he, why is he in the game, and why not someone else are just some of the many questions that players in the community are asking.
To begin with the basics, we are going to first go over who exactly Terry Bogard is. Terry is, first and foremost, a fictional character who originated from a video game series as with every single other character in the roster (sorry, Goku fans). This is a given as this is an established rule for the series.
Terry Bogard’s Official Reveal Trailer
Like most of the characters in the roster, too, Terry is a character who originates from a Japanese video game company and series. Terry Bogard was created by the long-running hardware and software company SNK Corporation, or Shin Nihon Kikaku, as the company was originally known as.
Despite coming from a Japanese company and series, the fighter Terry Bogard is regarded as being American and coming from the United States in the series. He is a mixed martial arts character who uses multiple fighting styles in the games that he is from.
Speaking of the games that Super Smash Bros Ultimate Terry Bogard is from, he is an original character best known for being the main character in the Fatal Fury series. His debut happened in 1991 in the game Fatal Fury: King of Fighters, which was the first in the series that would go onto spawn many games.
The original Fatal Fury: King of Fighters title released for the Neo Geo arcade and home platforms, which also comes directly from SNK as well. It was the first fighting game developed by SNK for the Neo Geo and would be an important part of the corporation’s history.
It was in this game that we were first introduced to Super Smash Bros Ultimate Terry Bogard, his brother Andy, their friend Joe Higashi, and the rival villain Geese Howard. All of these characters and more would make their debut in this title.
With so many important characters who originated from that first Fatal Fury title plus all of the other major series that SNK Corporation has come up with in its storied history, it begs the question: why Terry Bogard? Why not someone else be part of Super Smash Bros Ultimate instead of him?
For starters, there is the fact that SNK Corporation hasn’t really had much representation in the Nintendo fighting game series, despite being an important part of the fighting game community. So, it only feels right to have them be included next to Bandai Namco, Capcom, and the other fighting companies.
But beyond that, asking why Terry is still a good question because there are a lot of SNK characters who could have filled this role, especially since Terry isn’t exactly super recognizable outside of Japan beyond a core audience of fans. Well, it all begins with the fact that there weren’t too many prolific games from SNK prior to Fatal Fury.
Before that, the only somewhat recognizable game to come from SNK in the west and in Japan would be something like Ikari Warriors. However, that game wasn’t a fighting game so it does make more sense to lean into the fighting aspect that SNK is so well known for.
From there, there are only a couple of other series that would make sense for an inclusion in Super Smash Bros Ultimate as a fighter that released around that time of 1991. This would be something like maybe King of the Monsters, but that is a series that is focused more on kaiju-like monsters.
The only real contender would be the King of Fighters series that spun out of the tournament held in the original Fatal Fury or the Samurai Shodown series that experienced an important entry just this year. Perhaps Nintendo and SNK Corporation would like to honor the original fighting game for Neo Geo that is still an important part of SNK’s history.
With all of that said, there is still the issue that there are three main characters in the original Fatal Fury fighting game. Sure, you can play as Terry Bogard but his younger brother Andy and friend Joe are also playable at the start of the game.
You are able to pick one of those three and then who they will start out fighting against. While it makes sense to focus on the main characters, both Andy and Joe could have filled the roster easily. The reason Terry was likely picked was because of his fan-favorite status in the series and cultural impact across games, movies, and anime.
Though it all began with Terry being introduced in 1991, that was only the beginning for the fighting game hero. He was created with the intention of filling that macho fighter persona but has been updated over time to make him more of a peaceful person overall.
He originally entered the King of Fighters tournament in the first game along with his brother to avenge their father’s death against the tournament’s sponsor and main villain Geese Howard. This rivalry continued onward throughout the series as Terry competed in more tournaments and met Geese in the arena several more times.
This led to Terry’s inclusion in the King of Fighters ‘94 game where it was meant to be a crossover between a good portion of various SNK games. It eventually led to its own separate series of games where Terry was also prominent as one of the playable fighters.
In that series, Terry led the Fatal Fury team that was composed of characters from his own series. He has also appeared in other games throughout SNK Corporation’s history, ranging from the traditional fighting games he is known for to even shooters, RPGs, mobile games, dating simulators, and more.
Terry Bogard has been one of the most popular characters that SNK has come up with so it is no surprise that he has a lot of cameos and guest appearances in other titles. His history is long-running, just like the company he comes from, so it is really no surprise that he is in Super Smash Bros Ultimate.
That said, there are a good number of SNK characters who could have appeared in Nintendo’s fighting game franchise besides Terry. It is even possible that we could see some of these fighters show up in future games or as part of the second DLC fighters pass that will be starting soon.
For starters, there are the other stars of the Fatal Fury games that could join Terry Bogard as one of the fighters. This includes his brother Andy and his friend Joe who are popular characters in their own right. There is, of course, Terry’s evil nemesis Geese Howard who could be an interesting foil to him.
There is the female gender bent version of Terry that could be added to the game as just a simple palette swap rather than an entirely different fighter. There is also Kyo Kusanagi, who is one of the most popular characters from The King of Fighters series or his rival Iori Yagami.
Of course, there is Mai Shiranui who is very popular in the games and other media but she has already been shot down, likely due to her scantily clad physical appearance in her games. By far, the most possible and likely character, in our opinion, is Haohmaru, the lead protagonist of the Samurai Showdown series.
That series saw a new game this year that breathed new life into the long-running samurai-themed fighting series and would be a great fit for inclusion in Super Smash Bros Ultimate. There are, of course, many other possible options so we will have to just wait and see for now.
As for Super Smash Bros Ultimate Terry Bogard himself, though, you won’t have to wait too much longer to enjoy fighting as him. If you are reading this right now, he is already available for the game on your Nintendo Switch. Well, so long as you have him purchased at least.
Nintendo previously revealed that Terry Bogard would be introduced in the game in a Nintendo Direct and that he would be coming out in November 2019 as the fourth of five DLC fighters in the first DLC pass. While we still don’t know the identity of the fifth and final fighter, Terry did release in November as expected.
In the first full week of November, Nintendo announced a lengthy 45-minute video that would teach players all that they need to know about the upcoming fighter. This video posted on Wednesday, November 6 and it was confirmed that Terry would release that same day as expected.
If you are looking to add Super Smash Bros Ultimate Terry Bogard to your roster, you are going to need to do one of two things. The two options for purchasing and playing as Terry are by buying him individually or through owning the fighters pass.
If you aren’t wanting to fully commit to owning the whole fighters pass or just don’t want to spend the extra bit of cash, you are able to purchase Terry Bogard separately from the other four fighters. This lets you get him as a fighter, his new stage, music, and more.
But if you are interested in owning every fighter or not just Terry, then we recommend that you get the fighters pass. This will allow you to get all five of the first DLC fighters at a discounted rate than purchasing them all individually plus their new stages, music, and more.
If you already have the fighters pass and want to add Terry to your roster, we recommend making sure that your game is completely up to date with any recent patches. If you have the latest software update, you should see a notification that he has joined you when you boot up the game next.
