A MOBA game is one that is built on strategy, quick-thinking, fast reflexes, and a deep understanding of the characters that are available in it. Such is the case with Smite, a game that is regarded as one of the best options to check out in the MOBA genre at this time.
It has a simple premise of taking beloved and famous gods and mythical deities from throughout history and various pantheons and pushing them into an arena to duke it out for divine supremacy. From Greek mythology to Norse, we have fan favorites like Loki, Zeus, Athena, and more all here.
Smite is a game that is just as varied as the colorful cast of legends that make up its ever-expanding roster. As such, it can be difficult to nail down who a player wants to be when they boot up the game, especially if you happen to start playing in 2020 and beyond.
With well over 100 gods in total for players to choose from currently in Smite, it can be difficult to figure out who is the best of the best and who you are better off ignoring. As such, that is where we come in with our updated Smite tier list 2020.
We have previously done a tier list in the past but with a new year for the strategic game comes a new era as well. New gods have been released in the time since the last tier list we did while existing gods had their stats and abilities boosted or even nerfed.
As such, there are some characters that you might be surprised to see move up and down the list while exciting new entries like the recently released Heimdallr the Vigilant will shake up the metagame entirely. All in all, the Smite tier list 2020 isn’t too different from prior years but it has some key changes, nonetheless.
For those who don’t know, the well over 100 gods are divided up into five distinct classes in the game: Warrior, Guardian, Mage, Assassin, and Hunter. These classes are self-explanatory on their own with the Guardian focused on tanking while the Assassin is sneaking around for quick kills.
However, even still, it can be tough to figure out who you want to play as even if you already know what class you are interested in. After all, there are literally dozens upon dozens of gods to choose from for each of the classes.
Our Smite tier list 2020 aims to give you an idea of who is the best in the game is so you can more easily figure out which Warrior, Mage, or so on that you would like to check out. The criteria that we have for this list is rather simple.
When making this list, we took into consideration the overall strength of the god from their stats to their abilities as well as their synergy with the rest of the roster on a team, how useful they are in matches, how they compare to other gods in their class, and their general qualities that make them stand out.
Without further ado, let’s go ahead and jump right in to look at our updated Smite tier list 2020 including every god released up to Heimdallr and each of them broken up into tiers from best to just good.
With godly beings from around the world all together in one package, it is no surprise that the typical S tier will simply not cut it for these divine characters. There are some truly unbelievably strong gods in Smite so, as such, we needed to create another tier known as the SS tier.
These are the gods who can not only shape lands and cultures but the fate of matches themselves. Though you can certainly win matches without a SS god, you are one step closer to victory if you have one on your side. Even if you have no interest in these gods, it is best to know about them so you can prepare ahead of time.
Ao Kuang is known as one of the best gods for the middle lane for a reason. Kicking off this Smite Tier List is a Mage class god who uses some melee tactics in addition to the typical ranged attacks that the Mage class is known for.
What makes him so great is that this dragon god can hold his own well against almost every single god on this tier list. With his strong single target damage, he is the perfect fit for going out into the middle lane in the tried and true Conquest mode.
His ultimate is one of the best in the game but it can be tricky to execute if you aren’t familiar with the targeting. Therefore it makes him not just wonderful alone but a great asset with others as well. He can be a strong support character, too, having someone like Hades who can stop enemies set Ao Kuang up for an easy kill. His versatility in this regard makes him one of the best.
You’re going to start to see a trend here with the SS Tier gods. These gods are in a league of their own with their ability to be flexible on the battlefield and the best at doing this is King Arthur. It’s built into his actual character to be able to switch up tactics on the fly.
This is because King Arthur’s main feature is the ability to switch between two stances, sort of like what Hel does. What makes him so great, though, is that the two stances can cover a range of situations that you’ll come across within the game.
These two stances allow King Arthur to not only be a tank of sorts, despite his Warrior class, but he can deal massive area of effect damage, too. Couple this with his high mobility and you have one of, if not the, best gods on this entire Smite Tier List.
Merlin, like King Arthur, can switch stances but not in the same way. His stance changing is more limited and not nearly as game changing. Instead, his stances just switch up how he deals damage and the ways that you can counter against certain enemies.
As such, this does make Merlin one of the most complex gods in the whole game currently. You must contend with not just learning four abilities and a passive but several more because of his stance switching. Not only that, but they each work best against different gods.
With Merlin, it’s all about keeping enemies on their toes. If you can constantly be using your abilities as soon as the cooldown is up, they won’t be able to keep up well unless they, too, know his spells. Even if they do, though, the Flicker ability shared between all stances is great for escaping an unfortunate situation.
Rounding out the exceptional SS Tier is Hera, yet another Mage in this tier. What differs her from Ao Kuang and Merlin, though, is that she is far from the average Mage god. In fact, if you’re playing her like a normal Mage, you are playing her wrong.
Hera is a Mage who is really a Guardian in disguise with some Warrior-level damaging abilities. She excels at dealing damage up close and personal unlike her fellow magical gods. As such, if you can build her up with items that are designed to make her a tank, you will be almost unstoppable.
Together with her pet, Hera can keep enemies at bay as they focus on trying to take her out. They will be surprised to find that she is able to stay alive long enough to use her impressive crowd control abilities to control the field and get up close to take out the opponent. Her unpredictability is uncanny and makes her deserving of the SS Tier.
The S tier is your standard powerful and absolutely worth your time gods. Normally in most games, these would be the characters that would stand above the rest as the very best in the game. Even though there are a few characters that are just a bit more overpowered, the S tier is chock full of excellent characters to choose from.
These are gods that you will see quite often in matches on your team and fighting against you because they are very popular in the community for their prowess. You can find the list of the S tier characters below but before we get into that, let’s go over the latest god Heimdallr.
Heimdallr is the most recent god to join the massive roster of characters that span well over 100 at this point. At the time of writing this, the Norse god has roughly settled into the correct placement for him. This Hunter class character is one of the strongest we have ever seen for the class.
For starters, we have a Hunter who knows his prey and won’t let go of them. Just seeing an enemy god will power him up and ready him for the fight, and even if they run away, he’ll be able to see them for several seconds. The crazy part is that’s just his passive ability.
As for his other abilities, he can consistently reveal other gods, damage them from a ways away and even use his ultimate to deal some devastating damage that uses the power of all of the existing realms in Norse mythology. This is one Hunter that you shouldn’t ignore.
Beyond Heimdallr, here are the rest of the S tier gods in alphabetical order:
When it comes to the A tier gods, these are the ones who you can count on in most combat situations. Though they are not yet powerful enough to make it into the S tier, they are amazing all on their own. With a bit of tweaking and boosting, they could easily rank among the best. You can find the single largest group of legendary gods in this group below:
The B tier gods shouldn’t be ignored just because they are in the second to last group on this tier list. These are still great gods and, if anything, it is a testament to how strong the characters are in Smite that there are still so many solid gods here. In the right hands, these can still rival the S and even SS tier characters.
Finally, we have the C tier. Though this is the final tier on this list, don’t let it fool you. Unlike just about every other game out there, we can confidently say that there is no bad god whatsoever in Smite. Every character in this tier is at least good, if not good.
It just so happens that they happen to fall short of the other gods on this list for one reason or another. They could have only decent abilities or stats that keep them from reaching above the good quality. And just because a god is in this tier doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t consider playing them.
We have seen countless C tier gods who dominate a match in the right hands. It just might take a little bit more time and attention to turn one of these gods into a force to be reckoned with.
