Mortal Kombat 11 Tier List – Who Comes Out on Top?

by in Fighting Games | Jul, 1st 2019

As with all fighting games and even competitive games in general, there are some characters who are going to be better than others. These fighters give players a better chance of beating an opponent since the moves and overall feel of the character are done right.

As such, players are always wondering about a tier list with new fighting games to determine who’s the best and who’s the worst. This is doubly important for Mortal Kombat 11 since it’s one of the few fighting games available at launch for all modern platforms: Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

This has allowed the audience for the game to be much larger than it would have been otherwise. In fact, it even allowed Mortal Kombat 11 to become the first game in well over a decade to be the highest-selling game on all platforms for the month of its launch.

Though other games have launched on all four platforms, it’s the first this generation to sell the highest on all of them. With such a massive community, it’s even more imperative that players know where their favorite fighters end up on the list. As such, I am going to give you the Mortal Kombat 11 tier list that you need to know about.

Mortal Kombat 11 Tier List

For the purposes of this tier list, I am going to include all 25 fighters from the base game plus any DLC characters that released since the game’s launch, including the recently released DLC fighter Shang Tsung. He is the first of six post-launch DLC characters including crossover ones.

From new fighters to veterans and everything in between, this list includes all of the fighters in the roster. The ranking of the tier list is based on a number of factors like how strong they are, the quality of their moveset, how easy or flexible they are to use, viability online, and popularity in the community.

This list also takes into account how successful and popular the fighters are in the competitive community at the few tournaments that have happened since the game’s launch. Without further ado, let’s jump right into our Mortal Kombat 11 Tier List.

Mortal Kombat 11 Tier List: S Tier

Kicking this Mortal Kombat 11 tier list off is the S Tier. I am breaking this list down by starting with the S Tier and ending with the D Tier. S contains the best of the best fighters within the game for reasons that I will get into below, with each subsequent tier decreasing in the quality of the fighters.

As for the S Tier, specifically, these are the very best fighters in Mortal Kombat 11. They are top-tier in the roster for a number of reasons and will treat you well if you choose to use them in matches. As such, I decided to go into detail about what makes these fighters S Tier.

This will allow you to know if the character might work for you or, if you already have a favorite, help you prepare for what they are going to bring your way online.

MK 11 Geras

Geras makes his first playable appearance in the series with Mortal Kombat 11, and boy, does he not waste it. He is one of the — if not the — best fighters in the entire game. This servant of Kronika is a strong manipulator of time itself.

Geras has two main things going for him: his time manipulation and his insane combos. Starting with his combos, he is a force to be reckoned with in his moveset alone. Disregarding his abilities that we’ll get to in a moment, he is able to strike fear into his enemies with his power.

In addition to this, though, Geras can control the battlefield with his time abilities. He is able to do things like freeze opponents for a moment or even reverse time and teleport back to where he was before. He is one of the best fighters on this Mortal Kombat 11 tier list for good reason.

Sonya Blade

MK 11 Sonya Blade

Sonya Blade is as close-range as they come. She is all about her close-up attack combos that will devastate enemies. What makes her so interesting is that she can deal attacks that will confuse her enemy and make them have to figure out where the next one will come from.

The unpredictability of Sonya Blade is her most powerful asset. If you can overwhelm your enemy and prevent them from knowing where the next attack will come from, you will be able to secure the win easily. But it does come with the unfortunate issue that she is vulnerable to ranged fighters.

As such, it takes a lot of time and dedication to master some of the combos that Sonya uses. If you can do this, though, you will find that she is one of the best characters in the game and one that is well worth using.

Erron Black

MK 11 Erron black

On the opposite end of the spectrum from Sonya is Erron Black. This returning fighter from Mortal Kombat X is all about ranged attacks and controlling movement on the battlefield. His main weapon is his handy dandy rifle.

With his rifle, Erron can use numerous combos that are all about the spacing on the field. You are able to force your enemy away from you as well as pull them in closer. His powerful Zaterrean Spit can not only control the movement of his opponents but deal damage over time to them as well.

Erron is another complex character that takes patience and strategy to figure out. Your goal as him is to toy with your enemy and have them playing right into your hand. You always want to control them, and the ease of doing this with Erron makes him one of the strongest fighters around.

Jacqui Briggs

Mortal Kombat 11 Tier List Jacqui Briggs

Speaking of complex fighters, Jacqui Briggs almost takes the cake for being the most complicated in the roster. In the wrong hands, the player will have no idea what to do with her and will get owned quickly. On the other hand, the right player who masters her combos will have a variety of skills at their disposal.

Jacqui is known for being one of the most technical fighters around. She has a vast array of skills and attacks that feed into ever-growing combos for her to use. The sheer number of options for her can be overwhelming for newcomers to her.

But if you are able to take the time to find what works best for you, you won’t be disappointed. She has three main loadouts that focus on the three qualities she works best in: grappling foes, applying pressure to them, and her movement. With so many actions with free cancels, she is one that players should try to familiarize themselves with.

Cassie Cage

MK 11 Cassie Cage

Rounding out the S Tier list is Cassie Cage. Unlike Jacqui, Cassie remains a straightforward attacker with a simpler moveset. She is all about her speed and flexibility on the battlefield. Her rather limited moveset is complemented well by her robot companion.

Cassie has a good bit of variety in her movement, able to deal damage from both far away and up close. Her speed plays into this as well, allowing her to do a ranged attack to start up a combo and then swoop in fast and continue dealing damage in melee range to the enemy.

With the help of her robot buddy, Cassie is able to move fast to the point where your opponent won’t know what to do as the attacks will come faster than they can handle them.

Though she isn’t the most interesting fighter, she is a solid one that remains one of the best.

Mortal Kombat 11 Tier List: A Tier

Fighters who are in the A Tier are still great ones that shouldn’t be underestimated. With a few tweaks or fixes for them, each one could easily make the jump from the A Tier to the god-like S Tier. As such, if you are using one of these A Tier fighters and know them well, you can still be near unstoppable like with the S Tier ones.

MK 11 Scorpion

Scorpion has always been one of the great fighters in the Mortal Kombat games, and that doesn’t change with this one. At the same time, though, his similar moveset to previous games makes it so that he doesn’t rise higher than he could have to the S Tier.

Regardless, he’s a fighter that is worth checking out, especially if you played in any past titles. Scorpion will feel familiar to anyone who knows his previous moves. His signature “get over here” ability as well as some of his movements are roughly the same as ever before.

With that said, another reason that this great fighter isn’t able to climb the ranks to the S Tier is that he can be predictable. His moves are well known even for players who don’t use him, and most moves can be read by the opponent beforehand. This requires finesse from the user to put the pressure on during matches.

Noob Saibot

MK 11 Noob Saibot

Noob Saibot is a returning fan favorite or hated character, depending on who you ask. He focuses more on special moves than most any other character on the roster. The crux of his special moves revolves around the shadow clones that he can summon.

Though they are “clones,” they function more like typical projectile ranged attacks than anything else. You can blast these at your enemy over and over, both overwhelming them and annoying them in the process. This has led to him being a “troll” type of character.

As such, Noob Saibot isn’t for everyone. It takes a particular type of player to latch onto his weird special moves and utilize them correctly. You will need to be able to keep a distance from your foe, which limits how you can use him in matches.

MK 11 Sub Zero

Similar to Scorpion in both his strengths and weaknesses, Sub-Zero is another beloved character we all expected to be back. His moveset isn’t too much of a departure from past games with the focus being once again on his ice powers.

This makes him a great fit for newcomers in the game while still containing enough depth for experienced players to do well online. With his ice abilities, he is able to accomplish expected things like freezing the enemy and sliding across the field.

But like Scorpion, his abilities are far too predictable. They are well known within the community, and even if you don’t have them memorized, you can foresee what’s going to happen well beforehand. Thankfully, his long-ranged attacks can offset this limitation.

Mortal Kombat 11 Tier List Kabal

It’s been a good bit since we’ve seen Kabal in a Mortal Kombat game, and his break was well worth it. While Scorpion and Sub-Zero are mostly unchanged from their previous incarnations, Kabal has been changed up considerably.

Whereas before Kabal was a strong attacker that focused on putting the pressure on his enemies, he is now a more rounded fighter that focuses on reacting rather than acting first. Playing as him is all about reading your opponents, figuring out what they’re going to do before they do it, and then reacting accordingly.

Kabal is all about countering the enemy and dealing back some terrifying damage. Because of this, you don’t have to worry about remembering lengthy and vast combos to win as him. At the same time, though, this does come at the cost of being able to control the field since you need to act second.

Liu Kang

Mortal Kombat 11 Tier List Liu Kang

Rounding out the A Tier is Liu Kang, who suffers from many of the same issues as Scorpion and Sub-Zero. He is a character that everyone knows (and loves), but this means that everyone also knows what you’re going to do before you do it.

Despite this, Liu Kang can be a devastating fighter in the right hands. It’s all about taking control of the match early on and backing your opponent literally into a corner. When you do this, you are able to get close fast and keep them in that corner while unleashing attack after attack.

Liu Kang is strong and capable, able to get more powerful as time goes on as long as he can keep the upper hand.

Mortal Kombat 11 Tier List: B Tier

Don’t get me wrong, B Tier fighters are worthy of your time and effort. There are quite a few fighters in this tier, each of them ranging from good to great with some minor issues that keep them from reaching any higher than this. You can keep up with the S Tier and A Tier fighters with some understanding of the character.

  • Kitana
  • Jax Briggs
  • Skarlet
  • Johnny Cage
  • Baraka
  • Cetrion

Mortal Kombat 11 Tier List: C Tier

C Tier fighters are your run-of-the-mill average ones. There’s nothing super special about these characters, but they can be competent against most other fighters. However, if you take the time to master one of these fighters, you can find yourself able to take on S Tier fighters and hold your own.

  • Kano
  • Raiden
  • Kung Lao
  • Jade
  • Shao Kahn
  • Shang Tsung

Mortal Kombat 11 Tier List: D Tier

D Tier fighters suffer from being the most mediocre or even below average fighters on the Mortal Kombat 11 tier list. They aren’t that good at times, but there is still something interesting to find with them if you try hard.

The most important fact about these four fighters is that they are in dire need of some buffs and changes. NetherRealm Studios needs to tweak them so that they can stand with the rest of the pack.

  • Frost
  • The Kollector
  • Kotal Kahn
  • D’Vorah
