League of Legends Worlds 2020 Semifinals — A Quick Rundown

by in League of Legends | Oct, 23rd 2020

The LoL Worlds 2020 semifinals are here, and needless to say, we’re in for quite a show. Four of the best teams the world of competitive League has to offer will step foot on stage in Shanghai to compete for a shot at glory and the chance to etch their names in history. There’s quite a lot on the line, and we cannot wait to see these giants compete!

Still, there’s an air of uncertainty surrounding both semifinals matchups. No one’s quite sure what’ll happen and how things will develop. It’s like we all have a pretty darn good idea of who’s favored and why, but that means very little when these talented players spawn on the Summoner’s Rift. Some of them are better than others, but the differences are minute and nuanced. In other words, they’re separated by very slim margins, and which teams will emerge victorious heavily depends on how well they’ve prepared and whether or not they’ll be able to execute once things go down to the wire.

The Semifinal Matchups

First of all, no one expected to see Suning ranked so highly. Sure, they’re insanely talented, but they shouldn’t be this good. But for one reason or another, they’ve been dominating teams left, right, and center, despite the odds. They’re fighting their hearts out game after game, and they’re more than talented enough to compete at the highest of levels. Their Best of 5 against JD Gaming attests to the fact that their grit and sheer fortitude are commendable. Who’s to say they can’t replicate their level of play against Top Esports as well? Stranger things have happened throughout competitive League history, so it’s definitely within the realm of possibility.

No one’s quite sure what to think of G2 Esports vs. DAMWON Gaming, the first semifinal matchup scheduled to start on Saturday. DAMWON has this invincible aura around them, but they’re far from infallible. We’ve seen them fumble and fail, much like everyone else. They lost to G2 Esports at last year’s Worlds, which is a reason to stand with the LEC champions.

Sure, a lot can change in a single season, but they’re still the same team (with Jang “Ghost” Yong-jun instead of Sin “Nuclear” Jeong-hyeon). This DAMWON lineup always had a ton of potential, but they couldn’t execute. Now, however, they’ve managed to translate their scrim performance to stage. It’s quite a sight to behold. G2 Esports, however, have seen it all and done it all. They know what they’re up against and how to prepare best, which, given their volatile nature, doesn’t mean they’ll get the job done. Not in the slightest.

It’s like no one’s giving them much of a shot, and yet that’s both unfair and somewhat ignorant. They’re the most dominant team ever assembled on European soil and will go down in history as one of the best lineups to ever play the game. And, of course, they have a very positive record against LCK teams — including DAMWON. But ever since FunPlus Phoenix annihilated them at last year’s finals, it’s like fans have become unwilling to trust in their ability to clutch things out when everything’s on the line.

G2 Esports deserve more faith, and they often play their best League of Legends when pushed to the precipice of defeat. That’s when they truly go “online.” Remember Luka “Perkz” Perković’s LeBlanc in the fifth game against Royal Never Give Up? Or Rasmus “Caps” Winther’s masterclass at the 2019 Mid-Season Invitational? That’s G2 Esports when they pull it together and double down on their strengths. They’ve fought the best teams in the world and have won nearly every time.

Who’s to say they can’t do it again against DAMWON Gaming?

Closing Remarks

The LoL Worlds 2020 semifinals are bound to deliver in every way, shape, and form. The road towards this point wasn’t without its unexpected twists and turns, but what matters most is that the four best teams eventually managed to make it through. And now we’re all left to wonder — will we get yet another LPL vs. LEC grand finals (the third one in a row), or is the LCK destined to return to glory?

Fortunately, we won’t have to wait long to find out. Mark your calendars because you do not want to miss any of the action!
