How to Unlock the Warzone and Cold War OTs 9 SMG

by in Call of Duty | Jul, 20th 2021

Call of Duty Warzone and Black Ops Cold War just experienced a massive new influx of content with the launch of the Season 4 Reloaded update right in the middle of the current season. As part of this, there are two new weapons in the game, including the Cold War OTs 9 and more.

Black Ops Cold War OTs 9 SMG Released in Season 4 Reloaded

The Black Ops Cold War OTs 9 was released for the latest mainline entry in the series and the unbelievably popular battle royale spin-off Call of Duty Warzone. Both games now benefit from not one but two new weapons that players will be able to acquire and use.

Beyond the aforementioned Black Ops Cold War OTs 9 that is now available in both games, the Mace melee weapon is also available. These join existing new weapons, like the CR-58 assault rifle that launched with the fourth season a while back.

There is even more content than just new weapons in the Season 4 Reloaded update, too, like new maps for players to enjoy in both the online multiplayer segment and the Zombies mode. Furthermore, there are even some new game modes for players to check out at the same time.

All in all, the Season 4 Reloaded update is a massive one and one of the largest that we have seen for a midseason update since the launch of Black Ops Cold War late last year. Among that new content, though, players are interested in the Black Ops Cold War OTs 9.

As one of the few new weapons recently available in all game modes from normal multiplayer to Zombies to Warzone to even League Play, it is a weapon capable of possibly changing up the meta forever. That is where we come in with our guide to everything that you need to know about it.

Breaking Down the OTs 9 SMG

For starters, what is the Black Ops Cold War OTs 9? Well, it is a brand new SMG gun that has joined the game. We did not have a traditional addition to the SMG category at the start of the season like we usually do, where it is typically found alongside the new assault rifle in the battle pass.

Instead, Treyarch opted to focus on a different new weapon in the battle pass and save the new SMG later. Well, now the Black Ops Cold War OTs 9 is here, and it is quite the impressive gun. This is one that we imagine is going to be changing up the meta for many players.

What is important to note about the OTs 9 other than its interesting naming style is its niche in the already jam-packed category. Unfortunately, this is not the AK-74u killer that I would like to see in the game, but it is a killer of possibly another SMG, instead.

Treyarch itself has even described the weapon as similar to the Bullfrog SMG but better in almost every way. This is a gun that is your standard fully automatic machine gun capable of dealing some devastating damage when it comes to those classic close-range fights.

It is compared to the Bullfrog because both guns are extremely powerful and have some solid rates of fire. But the OTs 9 defeats the Bullfrog in these with slightly more damage per shot and a much-improved fire rate that is more than 100 RPM faster than the Bullfrog.

It will be an unbelievably powerful weapon at close range with the power and speed that SMG fans will likely appreciate. Now, there has to be something wrong with this gun to keep it in line and not disrupt the meta, and that one drawback is honestly not that bad.

The only real drawback about the Black Ops Cold War OTs 9 is that it has a tiny magazine that is not suitable for a weapon of this caliber. It only has 20 rounds in a single magazine, which is not a lot for a gun that will tear through those numbers in no time.

Treyarch mentions that this is enough to take care of a few operators on a single clip if you are conservative with your ammo, and especially if you have some headshots thrown in there, but 20 will only go so far. This is a gun that will need a larger magazine clip attachment if you want to use this to play for your life in larger game modes and League Play.

Treyarch is already billing this as one of the best SMGs in the game, and the Black Ops Cold War OTs 9 lives up to the claim. If you like to dominate close combat, this is one weapon that you will want to take a look at in the future.

Challenges for Unlocking the SMG

However, here is the problem with the Black Ops Cold War OTs 9 at this time: you are unable to get the gun by just playing the game, progressing through the Season 4 battle pass, and reaching a certain tier. Though past new SMG guns in other seasons did this, the OTs 9 is different.

It is similar to other post-launch weapons in the game, like melee weapons and sniper rifles, where you will have to do some other activities in the game to earn the right to call this SMG your own. You will need to prove that you are capable of handling this weapon.

With this in mind, there is a single challenge that you must complete in either Call of Duty Warzone or Black Ops Cold War to unlock the Black Ops Cold War OTs 9 for future use. Of course, Warzone players could pick this up as ground loot or from other players, but that leaves little control for you.

If you want to use it in your battle royale or multiplayer loadouts, you will want to unlock it permanently. This way, you will customize the weapon to your liking, with the attachments and cosmetics to make it all your own.

The single challenge that you must do might not sound like a lot at first since it is only one mission, but that single challenge could take you a while. Below, you will find the one challenge that you must do to unlock the Black Ops Cold War OTs 9 for future use:

  • Using SMGs, kill three enemies affected by your tactical equipment in 15 different matches

For completing this mission, you will unlock the OTs 9 for good and get some nice little experience for your account this season. Bear in mind, though, that this challenge will take you a while as you have to do at least 15 matches in total.

Fortunately, that is where we come in with our tips for completing the Black Ops Cold War OTs 9 challenge and unlocking the weapon in the simplest way possible. Just be prepared to set aside a good bit of time since you will need to play at least 15 matches in total.

Tips for How to Unlock It

The challenge for the OTs 9 SMG is the same no matter if you are playing Cold War or Warzone, so you can do it in whichever game you prefer (or own, if you only have Warzone). The gist here is that you must use an SMG you already have to take out three opponents in a single match.

That in itself is a pretty simple task: get three kills. But the catch here is that all three of those eliminations must be players who must be affected by your tactical equipment. This means your items like the stun grenade, flash grenade, and so on.

These are items that will not kill a player but stun or weaken them long enough for you to get in there and take them out. The problem is that the timing of being able to flash or stun someone and then eliminate them with an SMG in likely close quarters will be a little tricky.

Furthermore, you have to do it three times in a single match. And then you have to turn around and make sure to replicate that performance in 15 different matches. There is no way to speed up the process of getting these kills.

This is because Treyarch does not allow you to get the kills and then leave the match. This would speed things up so that you could go from match to match, but you must complete every match you are in to count for this challenge.

In this way, I do not recommend doing this in Warzone if you want to get this done quickly. Not only will you potentially be searching for a while for three players to complete this with, but then you must complete the match after that (though dying does not take much here).

Instead, my recommendation for the Black Ops Cold War OTs 9 challenge is to do Team Deathmatch in Black Ops Cold War, if you can. This is about the usual mechanics of getting as many eliminations as you can, so that means plenty of opportunities to do this mission.

Plus, Team Deathmatch does not take too long overall for a single match of this, so you could get 15 done in a reasonable amount of time. I am trying to get this done in League Play and kill two birds with one stone, but I expect it to take me a while overall this way. Fortunately, unlocking in one game will unlock it for your same account in the other, so do whichever is best for you.

Alternative Method of Unlocking the OTs 9

Look, I get it, we are all busy people with jobs, school, family, and the like, and it is tough to dedicate some time to get this challenge done, especially in a game mode that might not be your favorite. As such, there is, thankfully, an alternative method of unlocking this brand new SMG gun.

For players whose time is not on their side or who do not want to go through the lengthy process of completing this challenge, the alternative method is the usual one of just purchasing the weapon from a store bundle. This will speed up the process and instantly give it to you for further use.

You can get the Black Ops Cold War OTs 9 currently through the Inside Job weapon bundle. This one costs 1200 Call of Duty points, or around $12, and it comes with a special blueprint that includes the OTs 9 SMG. This is a solid way of getting the weapon as soon as possible.

The store bundle comes with more than just the SMG gun, too. It has the Undercover Agent weapon blueprint for the OTs 9 SMG, a finishing move to use in matches to show off, a weapon charm, sticker, emblem, and a single battle pass tier skip for use in whichever season you want.
