How to Unlock the Beloved Black Ops Cold War Ballistic Knife

by in Call of Duty | Apr, 27th 2021

One of the most popular weapons in the Call of Duty Black Ops franchise is the Ballistic Knife. This weapon is an intriguing piece of the weapon arsenal, allowing for two different ways of using it. With the addition of the Black Ops Cold War Ballistic Knife, its legacy continues onward.

Infamous Black Ops Cold War Ballistic Knife Is Here

The infamous Black Ops Cold War Ballistic Knife is here right now in the game to introduce the third season of content. This new season is full of great content additions and changes that players can now check out for the next couple of months.

By the time you read this, the third season is already here, both in Cold War and Warzone, with a ton of new changes for you to see. One major part of any new season is the new weapons released for it, and this recently released season is no different.

A whopping six different weapons are coming this season, but, unfortunately, only three of them are available at the start of the season. The other three will be releasing later on in the season, likely around the midway point when we get the Reloaded update.

In the meantime, players have three new weapons to unlock and check out, each with their methods of adding them to your arsenal. One such weapon is the Black Ops Cold War Ballistic Knife, which is only available through two main unlocking methods.

We will break down what the Black Ops Cold War Ballistic Knife is, the different methods for unlocking it, and some tips for getting this done the fastest. Without further ado, let’s take a look at this iconic weapon that has joined the Cold War roster of gear.

Ballistic Knife Explained

For those who don’t know, the Black Ops Cold War Ballistic Knife is a special knife introduced in the first Black Ops game and has been in many titles since. It is a beloved weapon for many reasons, mainly due to the different methods of using it available to players.

It looks no different from any other knife that you might use in Black Ops Cold War from the onset. There are knives already in the game for you to run around with, swipe at enemies, or sneak up behind them and use to make one of the several finishing moves available.

However, what is special about the Black Ops Cold War Ballistic Knife is that it isn’t just capable of being a normal knife that you can attack enemies within close combat or for finishing moves. That is just the first possible way of using it in the online matches that you do.

The other method of using the Black Ops Cold War Ballistic Knife is actually for longer-range activities. You can throw this knife at enemies from a distance and, if it lands, you will deal some serious damage. How much damage exactly?

It will instantly kill the enemy right then and there, no matter how much health or armor they are currently wearing on them. This is just like when you would stab them from close up as that would also give you an instant KO on the enemy player.

This unique duality of the Black Ops Cold War Ballistic Knife is similar to what we have with the Tomahawk axe. Still, the utility is potentially even more flexible. As such, we expect players to run around with this special knife quite frequently in future matches as it is a secondary weapon.

How to Unlock the Ballistic Knife

With the Black Ops Cold War Ballistic Knife introduction, you might be interested in using it for yourself. Well, to do that, you are going to need to complete a challenge in the game. Doing so, though, will allow you to unlock the weapon permanently in the game for free without spending anything.

This is different from the other two new weapons available at the launch of Season 3, as they are unlocked via the new battle pass. Players have to progress through the different tiers this season and reach a certain number before it is over or risk never getting that weapon.

The Ballistic Knife is a permanent addition, though, and you can finish the mission for it anytime that you would like. To help you out, we have compiled the description of the single challenge that you must do below so that you don’t have to go digging for it through the menus:

  • Get a One Shot, One Kill medal and a melee kill in the same life in 15 different matches in total

Though this is only one challenge that you must do, it is one of the most complicated and difficult tasks we have ever seen for a new weapon in Black Ops Cold War. It is essentially trying to make sure that you, the player, can accomplish both methods of using the knife before unlocking it.

It can be used as a one-hit kill melee weapon in close combat but is also available for one-hit kills from afar when thrown. As such, the weapon requires you to prove that you can do both of these in 15 different matches before you can use it.

You need to make sure that you can get a single shot kill from afar in a match and then get a melee kill however you’d like all within the same life in 15 different matches. It is a tough task overall, but we are here to help you complete with some special tips.

Tips for Completing the Challenge

Without a doubt, this Black Ops Cold War Ballistic Knife challenge is one of the difficult ones we’ve seen in the game. It is one thing to get a One Shot, One Kill medal in 15 different matches or a melee kill but to have to do both in the same match?

That is pretty darn tough. To make matters worse, you can’t just get a snipe kill in one life in the match and then go for a melee kill in the next; you have to get both of these kills in the same life. This essentially means you need to run around with a sniper rifle in your primary and a melee weapon in your secondary.

You don’t technically have to since you can always melee with any weapon but pressing a certain button, depending on if you’re on controller or mouse and keyboard, but this is the most useful scenario. What you need to do is aim to get a sniper kill and then a melee kill in the same life.

This is not going to be easy to accomplish, so I recommend a game mode where you can take your time and not feel rushed. At the same time, though, you want plenty of allies who can watch your back so you can use your time wisely to line up this shot.

As such, there are two methods that I would go to complete this mission. The first is going in one direction and sticking to the large team modes like the Combined Arms ones. This way, you can take your time and line up the perfect sniper angle to get that one-shot kill.

From there, you then need to turn around and find someone to sneak up behind and melee kill them, which is why the melee weapon is necessary. If you don’t have a melee weapon, you aren’t guaranteed to kill them in one hit, which can prove detrimental in certain combat scenarios.

The alternative way of doing this is the total opposite: a smaller game mode that is more intimate, like Search & Destroy. This one is tricky since there aren’t too many players and only one life per round, but you could start with a nice snipe at the beginning of the round followed by a sneaky melee attack on another player.

Whatever the method that you choose, you can’t just do this once. You have to make sure that you do it in 15 different matches in total. You will need to complete each match entirely to count towards the challenge, or else you will lose progress.

Alternative Way of Unlocking the Knife

Let’s be real: this challenge for the Black Ops Cold War Ballistic Knife is quite a lot to accomplish, so we understand anyone who would be frustrated by this whole challenge. There is, thankfully, a better alternative for those who would like the knife without the annoyance of doing these 15 matches.

The other way that you can unlock it is by purchasing the weapon bundle that contains the knife. Doing so will unlock it automatically and a whole lot faster than if you were to do it the traditional way. The bundle that you will be looking for is the Disappearing Ink weapon bundle.

This one is in the store right now. It includes the new Black Inknife weapon blueprint for the Ballistic Knife that looks pretty rad, honestly, and some other goodies. Fortunately, unlike some of the weapon bundles out there, this one only costs 1000 points, around $10.

Once you get the weapon blueprint, it will automatically unlock the base knife for you as well. We get that not every player will want to spend some money unlocking this new melee weapon, which is fine. That is what the challenge is there for, allowing you to unlock it without having to spend any extra cash.

Is the Knife Available in League Play?

One of the questions that might be on some players’ minds is whether or not the Black Ops Cold War Ballistic Knife is available in League Play or not. This ranked mode has very few weapons available for it, but that does include melee weapons in general.

And there are plenty of players who run out with a knife or machete in their hands that you have to watch out for. Unfortunately, though, the Ballistic Knife is not included in the weapons to add to your loadout in the League Play game mode.

You see, the reason behind this is actually because of the categorization of the knife itself. While you might expect it to be a simple melee weapon like the E-Tool and the others that have been released, that is not the case as the weapon is something rather special. Literally.

The Ballistic Knife is found under the special category of weapons, for some odd reason, alongside stuff like the rocket launcher. Since it is found under this category, it is not available in League Play since that category is completely restricted from the ranked mode.

Had it been under the normal melee section, you could use it as a secondary weapon like the others. This is unfortunate since the Ballistic Knife could have been an excellent secondary weapon in League Play, especially for those snipers out there. You would have your long-range

sniping rifle and the knife that you could use to sneak up on other players with or throw from mid-range distance to take them out in one hit.
