How Many People Play Call of Duty?

Call of Duty is one of the few series that has continued since its creation, with a game coming out every year since its inception. But when it comes to player numbers, is Call of Duty still the juggernaut that it’s been made up to be?

The Statistics Speak for Themselves

Call of Duty has always been one of the biggest gaming titles of our generation. From PC to Xbox 360, to PS4, and now to PS5 and Xbox Series X, the number of titles Call of Duty has maintained is second to none. And players are continuing to play older games in the series, despite newer ones coming out every year.

Checking the Steam Charts for previous entries in the series, just on PC, Black Ops 3 from 2019 is holding around 5,000 players still with Modern Warfare 2 and World at War holding closer behind. While these are just previous entries in the series, they’re also only the numbers on PC. When Microsoft announced backward compatibility for Black Ops 2, it became one of the bestselling games in the month it was announced, with thousands of people buying the game yet again to be able to play Black Ops 2 one more time.

This goes double for Modern Warfare 2019. According to ActivePlayer.io, the game currently holds around 153,000 players, even with Cold War being out for almost a year. Even Call of Duty Mobile is hosting 266,000 concurrent players at the time of writing.

The game, which is the most current release in the series, has two million people still playing it. However, as much as people are still playing Call of Duty games from years past while there are new games out, nothing can compare to the massive number of players enjoying Call of Duty free-to-play option.

Warzone’s Overwhelming Success

Warzone’s overwhelming success is no surprise, with over 100 million players in the game. However, it’s only gotten bigger. In an earnings document published by Activision, Warzone is currently sitting at a monthly 111 million players. While most of that playerbase is brought in because of Warzone being free-to-play, Warzone is also one of the biggest battle royale games out there because of its heritage. Holding the Call of Duty brand is one of the key factors in Warzone’s success. Combine that with the engine and gameplay of Modern Warfare 2019, which received critical acclaim for its back-to-basics gameplay, and Warzone is the best-case scenario for Call of Duty.

Warzone has proven to be one of the biggest titles in the franchise. Combining the numbers between Cold War, Warzone, and Modern Warfare, there are more than 113 million players enjoying what Call of Duty has offered over the past two years. More players are also enjoying the entire library of Call of Duty titles, with each game holding a small yet active playerbase. Not many game franchises can keep that kind of player commitment, which touts Call of Duty as the only first-person shooter franchise to go to.
