How a Twitch Streamer Made Over $120,000 While Sleeping

Milestones are something that every content creator celebrates, and while some creators will participate in a Q&A or a special live stream, it seems like one Twitch streamer decided to make the most of his 100k sub milestone by sleeping.

The Streamer Behind the Covers

Meet Twitch streamer Ludwig, also known as Ludwig Ahgren. After hitting 100k subscribers on his channel, he decided to participate in the tried-and-true tradition of a “subathon,” which usually means an extra-long stream averaging around 24 hours.

However, Ludwig decided to put a twist on his subathon, in which every sub he receives during the stream puts a small number of seconds on a clock that determines when it’s time for Ludwig to log off.

The kicker? He’s been live since March 15. This streamer sleeps, eats, and showers live for an audience of up to 50,000 viewers every day, and this has been going on for over a week.

How Ludwig Turned Sleeping Into a Job

Ludwig’s initial plan to ensure that Twitch wasn’t holding him hostage against his will was to sleep on stream, thinking that people would get bored while he slept, and the hours he slept would be taken off the clock. But as anyone who’s spent a good amount of time on the web, things tend to not go the way you’re expecting.

When Ludwig hit the hay for the first time, the chat reacted by spamming Ludwig with subs after subs, making the clock increase exponentially in time, adding anywhere from 8-24 extra hours on the clock. This may seem bad in the scope of things for Ludwig, but things honestly could not be better moneywise, as each sub is around $5, and with some simple math, and assuming that each sub adds 15 seconds, eight hours on the clock is around $28,000.

A Reddit post from two days into the stream shows that Ludwig made about $140,000 in total. With the stream continuing for about a week now, people can only speculate how much more revenue Lugwig can bring in. That is what his community is doing now, as a spreadsheet that can be found here shows that after taxes, Ludwig will walk away with $181,459.80

How Long Will This Go on For?

The big debate is how long will this subathon stream continue. As subs keep rolling in the clock will keep increasing. The current consensus is that the clock increases the most when the streamer sleeps, and the spreadsheet documenting the subathon has done their research, giving estimates on how long they think Ludwig will last, depending on both best- and worst-case scenarios. With an average estimate of five days left, Ludwig’s subathon on Twitch has made him the most-watched and most subbed streamer on Twitch, and that momentum seems to keep going.
