Diablo 2: Resurrected Runewords Guide – What You Need to Know

Runewords in Diablo 2 are the way to real power, but it’s not always an easy system to grasp. This is because you have to grind all the right runewords in Diablo 2 itself, have the right items, with the right amount of empty gem slots. Runes are in the same vein as Gems, in that you slot them into those same open spots on your gear. With the right Rune combination on the right piece of gear, you can do incredible things, and trivialize even the hardest content in the game. Diablo 2’s Runes are also a form of currency. In online games, people tend to use runes to trade for other in-game items. The rarer the word, the more valuable it is. 

I’ll go over that when I show the entire Rune List. But how do you get Runes?

How to Acquire Runes:


Runes can drop off of anything in Diablo 2. From Normal to Hell difficulty, enemies can drop them for killing them. So the best way to assure you’re getting Runes is to get lots of items drops! One tip that worked in the original Diablo 2, and it is a command that shows up in Diablo 2: Resurrected! You can hit “/players X” and change the number of players the game recognizes. The X is 1-8. The more party members you have, the more drops the enemies have, but the harder the game is. 

The “Magic Find” stat also doesn’t help! So don’t stress about that. However, Magic Find does help you find Unique/Set items, so I wouldn’t just throw that gear out. If Runes are your only goal, then feel free to just put on your best Killing Gear, and head into the world. So you want to head to areas with high amounts of enemies to defeat. The Secret Cow Level, Flayer Jungle, and most of the Act One Overworld work for this.

The Forgotten Tower boss (Act One, Black Marsh), The Countess is the only monster in the game that has a higher chance to drop runes, so this is a place worth farming. It’s also said that enemies that can’t drop armor or weapons have a better chance to drop runes – since they have to drop something. As far as guaranteed Rune drops, a trio of quests will reward Runes. Forgotten Tower, The Hellforge (Act 4), and Rescue on Mount Arreat (Act Five) have Rune rewards. Rune Quality also increases with level. The deeper you go into the game (and the difficulty) has a cap of what kind of rune it can hold:

  • Act 1 Normal: No Runes from Chests
  • Act 2 Normal: El/Eld/Tir/Nef
  • Act 3 Normal: Eth/Ith/Tal/Ral
  • Act 4 Normal: Ort/Thul/Amn/Sol
  • Act 5 Normal: Shael/Dol

In Diablo 2: Resurrected, like in the original, there are Runewords, and there are also easier Runeword recipes! The Recipes are combinations of Runes and items that you put into your Horardric Cube and combine them. We’ll cover those first.

These are far easier to do, provided of course you have the Runes. For these, the first list of items is the recipe ingredients, the second being the effect it will have.

Those are incredibly easy to do. They’re still random, so bear that in mind. You aren’t always going to get 6 sockets on a weapon, for example. But what about the big Runewords? 

Diablo 2 Runewords Full List:


In total, there are 78 Runewords in Diablo 2. They do some incredible things, even granting access to powers your class doesn’t have – unless specified otherwise on the item. A fun example is granting the power of turning into a Werebear. It’s been revealed that all Diablo 2 Runewords are going to be available. Even the ones that were Ladder-only. So Ladder, Non-ladder, and Single-player characters can enjoy the Runeword collections. On that same note, Uber Diablo and Pandemonium Events are also available in Diablo 2: Resurrected. Below we’ll cover the Runeword Name, the Item(s) Needed, Runes Required, and the Effects they grant.

There are restrictions though. While Runewords can be equipped on any character, the items have restrictions. They must be the correct item type, for example. They must also be Grey Text Items – Normal, Exceptional, Elite. Low-Quality, Superior, and Ethereal can be used, but not Magic, Rare, Set, Crafted, or Uniques. The item must have the exact amount of Runewords – no more, no less. You must also slot the runes in the right order. You can remove an item from a socket, but be aware – It destroys that item.
